Directions: • Students should listen to the categories that these cases fall into and a brief description to help them choose the case they want to research further. • There will be no duplicate of cases. • There are more cases then listed here that you may do with my approval.
Education Cases • Brown v. Board of Education – desegregation of public schools • Engle v. Vitale – school can not force students into saying a school prayer • Tinker v. Des Moines- wearing of arm bands is protected in school • Veronica School District v. Acton – random drug testing is allowed in schools • Abington School District v. Schempp– Bible reading in the classroom and the removal of students who don’t wish to hear it • Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier– freedom of speech in school newspapers
New Jersey v. TLO – search and seizure of property on school grounds • West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette– pledging the flag
Equal Rights for All Races • Dred Scott v. Sandford– African Americans were not citizens and not given rights under the law • Korematsu v. United States – Japanese internment during WWII • Loving v. Virginia – allowing mixed raced marriage • Plessy v. Ferguson – separate but equal resources for different races • United States v. Amistad – rebellion of Africans on a Spanish ship • Worcester v. Georgia – tribal sovereignty in the US • Regents of the Univ. of California v. Bakke – equal protection for admittance to colleges
Legal Rights • Furman v. Georgia – death penalty cruel and unusual punishment • Gregg v. Georgia– death penalty cruel and unusual punishment • Gideon v. Wainwright – provide council for those who can’t afford it • Miranda v. Arizona – rights of individuals in police custody • Mapp v. Ohio – search and seizures
Personal Liberty • Cruzan v. Missouri – clear and convincing evidence to be removed from life support without a living will • New York Times Company v. Sullivan – lawsuits for defamation of character • Reno v. ACLU – adult content on the internet • Roberts v. Jaycees – exclusion of women in clubs • Roe v. Wade – right to an abortion
U.S. v. Eichman– right to burn the flag • Texas v. Johnson– right to burn the flag • Reynolds v. United States – anti-bigamy case
Government Rights • Marbury v. Madison – allowed the courts the power of judicial review • McCullough v. Maryland – congress has implied powers and the states can not interfere with these powers • U.S. v. Nixon – limited the power of the president • Gibbons v. Ogden – states can not interfere with the governments power to regulate interstate commerce
New York Times v. United States – prevention of printing issues of national security
