  3. Point of View and Imagery • Third Person • O’Brien uses details and dialog to capture the tone of the chapter • Details include describing the body, and the surroundings • Dialog is only between other character or directed to Tim; he is in shock

  4. Setting • Forest out side the village • Clay trail where the Vietnamese soldier lay • My Khe, Quang Ngai • The providence where the soldier was from taught all their sons to fight out of duty

  5. Character Description • Indirect: soldier: how he could have been a scholar, his love of mathematics; fell in love • Direct: soldier: his looks; Kiowa: sweating and uneasy with Tim’s reaction • The way O’Brien describes the dead soldier makes him seem alive, you believe in the character’s integrity of being real

  6. Overview • Chapter shows how the war effected soldiers; notable how it destroys innocence • “The Man I Killed” is the first time in the book when Tim is portrayed as a “real soldier” • After this chapter he isn’t innocent he’s just one of the guys to a degree
