Topographic Maps. Mr. King. Hints to work with topographic maps. Small lines perpendicular to contour lines are called hachure lines. Hachure lines point downhill. Contour lines never cross. “V” shaped contour lines point up stream.

Hints to work with topographic maps. • Small lines perpendicular to contour lines are called hachure lines. • Hachure lines point downhill. • Contour lines never cross. • “V” shaped contour lines point up stream. • A cross section line (X,Y) crosses contour lines to help determine cross section of land • Contour lines explain elevation above sea level.
