F. Chemical Reactions – process by which chemical changes occur; rearrangement of atoms.
Remember: 6CO2 + 6H2O + sunlight C6H12O6 + 6O2 reactants– the substance(s) that undergo a chemical change products– the substance(s) formed as a result of the chemical change yields – forms
endothermic endo = into reaction in which energy is transferred to the reactants and stored; gaining energy
Remember: exothermic reactions exo = out of a reaction that releases energy to the surroundings; loses energy C6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy energy released aerobic respiration
In a chemical reaction: • bonds between atoms are broken • atoms remain intact • new bonds are formed • Conservation of Mass • Chemical Equation – a symbolic representation of a chemical reaction • Balanced Chemical Equation – same number of each type of atom on each side of equation.
Guidelines for balancing equations: • Start with element that appear only once on each side of the equation • Work from left to right • Leave subscripts alone! • Only change numbers (coefficients) in front of the formulas • Coefficients of 1 are assumed and do not appear in balanced equation • Try to save Oxygen and Hydrogen to balance last • When done, CHECK your results
