How to Survive English X The quick and simple guide to doing well in Mr. F’s English class.
Make Notes & Highlight main points • We only remember what has been reinforced and repeated • Make notes in class • Writing things down will help you remember • NOW: Write down the titles for each slide as they appear to reinforce and remember & point form to remember all important info (use the Cornell System @ How to Do Cornell Notes ) • 1 page per day
We are all in this together • Believe it or not, I’m here for YOU • Entire goal is to get you ready for the next stage whether that is another course or stage of life • The work you do is for you, not for me; I’m merely the guide on the side; I’m the gardener, not the plant.
Be Here Everyday • Seems simple enough, but many students miss too many classes • Absent? I expect 4 things: • Call the school • AND Check online for what you missed • AND Email Mr. F. • AND do the work (unless you are SOOOOO sick you are praying at the porcelain alter all day and all night).
Do Your Best Work on ALL your work • The ONLY students who are unsuccessful either • Don’t do all their work OR • Don’t do their best work on the work they do • Solution: do ALL your work to the BEST of your ability
Stop Fighting Mr. F. & Start Trying Things • Door / Window/ Wall (see other PPT) • 17 years teaching English • 3420 students taught • Trust that I might know what I’m talking about • If you disagree, try it first, then see me to discuss why it didn’t work.
Use your Agenda Planner • “If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail.” • You already know life is busy: school, friends, jobs, parents, etc. • Keeping track of everything is hard • Use your agenda to track ALL your activities in one place so you can prioritize your time
Devote 30 Minutes every day to this course as a habit • Can you do 100 push ups? (+5 a week for 20 weeks = 100) • Build the habit now by reading, preparing, and organizing for this class every day • Do your work early so you can proofread and improve • Got no homework? Then read a book, magazine, newspaper, or pre-read something for this course.
Use the Intro Packages • I killed many trees to give you these packages. • Course Overview is important • Use the handouts to preview information. • Use packages to help pre-learn and reinforce • Paragraph Writing • Essay Writing • Terminology • Topics & Themes • Citations & Quotes • Editing • Writing Guidelines • Poetry
Use SharePoint & the Internet • You are the first generation in HISTORY to have some much raw information a mere mouse click away. • Use these resources to help learn • Then use Mr. F. to help interpret and explain what you don’t understand • And get a USB flash drive!
Recapping • Takes notes (1 pg/day) • I’m here for you if you are here for me. • Be here everyday • Do all your work to the best of your abilities • Less fighting + more trying = greater success • Planner = success • 30 minutes a day • Use the resources
Final Thoughts • I will trust you until you give me reason to do otherwise. • I will respect you and work with you to solve problems. • I will promptly correct and offer feedback on your work. • I will work with you to meet learning goals. • When in doubt, ask for help.
