River Oaks ElementaryIB World School Exhibition 2015-16
What is Exhibition? • Collaborative project of the IB/PYP • Completed in the final year of program • Synthesis of the components of the PYP Knowledge Concepts Skills Attitudes The Learner Profile Action
Timeline of the Exhibition • January-March • Frontloading: speaker panel, pre-search, topic selection • Final topic selection decided before students leave for camp • After Spring Break • Write Lines of Inquiry • Brainstorm initial research questions • April • Research, interview, field trips • Create a plan for action • May • Plan for presentation • Presentation to the community – Thursday May 19th – 5:30-7pm
Project Components • Extensive research using the IIM approach • Meaningful action taken as a result of their learning • For Presentation Night: • Written component – in the form of an artist statement • Visual component – 2D or 3D art piece • Technology Component – the story of their action • Oral presentation
Assessments • Students will be assessed throughout the project both for formative and summative grades. Teachers will communicate all check points for assessment and rubrics will be shared with students in advance. • An Exhibition Organizer will help students keep track of the process and assist with staying on top of due dates.
What can you do to help? • Cheer students on and be an encourager! • Help students locate relevant and readable resources to be brought to school. • Help connect students to primary sources • Facilitate off campus visits/interviews and action
What can you do to help? • Be a sounding board for student ideas • Encourage creativity in presentation • Provide materials needed for presentation • Be a guest speaker, mentor or help recruit mentors!!
What we would ask you NOT to do: • Complete any of the project for your child! • Lead them in a direction they are not interested in taking their work • Tell them how to do their project or what they should care about • Discount their ideas
Materials • We will provide all students with a floppy notebook and dividers for their research. We will also allow students access to all classroom materials that would normally be available to them for their products. • If your child needs specialized materials for their display or presentation, we would ask that you help by providing these materials for them.
Speakers and Mentors • Adult helpers are the lynchpin to a successful Exhibition. We have two important ways you can help this year: • We need approximately 40 small group mentors. Mentors commit to 6 weeks of shepherding a small group of students through their inquiry project. • We also need experts in the various fields to be guest speakers, interviewees, primary sources and field trip support. (immediately I am looking to find participants for a speaker panel about real world hot topics)
