Week 1 Roots: • DICT, DIC, DIT = speak, declare • VEN, VENT = come • DUCT, DUC = lead.
DICT, DIC, DIT = speak, declare • Prediction (n) - Something that foretells the future; a prophecy; a declaration or telling in advance • Dedicate (v) - To set apart for some purpose and esp. for something sacred or serious: devote; to address or inscribe as a compliment • Contradictory (adj) - Inclined to declare or speak against; tending to state the opposite opinion • Dictatorship (n) - A country or form of government where absolute power is exercised by an imperious ruler
VEN, VENT = come • Conventional (adj) - Conforming or adhering to accepted custom, practice, belief or taste; without originality • Venturesome (adj) - Having or showing a disposition to undertake something involving uncertainty or risk • Prevention (n) - The act of stopping or keeping something from coming or happening
DUCT, DUC = lead. • Aqueduct (n) - Artificial channel for conducting water over a distance from a remote site • Productive (adj) - Capable of creating by mental or physical effort; fertile; yielding favorable results • Deduce (v) - To trace the course or derivation of; to derive as a conclusion from something known or assumed
Your Homework • Your homework (due Wednesday): Create 13 sentences using the remaining roots. • Use all 10 vocabulary words in a sentence. • Then find one other word that uses each of the roots and make a sentence for those 3 words. • Your sentences must hint at the meaning of the word.
FOR EXAMPLE: • - cracy : Rule by; governed by • Not acceptable: The country was a democracy. • Acceptable: The country aims to strengthen democracy through greater citizen participation in local governance.

FIN - end • Finality (n) - Conclusiveness or decisiveness; characterized by being settled or complete; something that is an ultimate act or belief • Infinite (adj) - Unlimited; boundless; endless; immeasurably great • Refinery (n) - An establishment for bringing something (as petroleum or sugar) to be free or be separate from impurities
Sed, Sid, Sess – sit; be still • Residential (adj)- Pertaining to the house or place where one lives; characterized by private homes • Obsession (n) - Domination of one's thoughts or feelings by a persistent idea, image or desire • Sedate (adj) - calm or quiet; serenely composed in character or manner • Supersede (v) - To replace in power, position, function, effectiveness or office; to supplant

STA/SIST = stand, place • Stamina (n) - Strength or power to endure fatigue or stress; endurance • Establish (v) - To bring into being on a firm or permanent basis; to install in a position or place • Statistics (n) - Science dealing with the collection, analysis and interpretation of numerical data • Superstitious (adj) - Believing in an irrational notion resulting from ignorance, fear of the unknown or belief in fate, omens or magic
VERT/VERS = turn • Anniversary (n) - Yearly recurrence of the date of past events; celebration of a date • Diversify (v) - To make unlike as in form or character; to give or produce variety • Versatility (n) - Capability of adapting or turning easily from one to another of various tasks; changeability
