  1. Maximise your performance at your job interview Julie Hyde MA BA(Hons) RN RCNT RNT FRSA FRSPH 3rd & 4th July 2013

  2. Purpose of a job interview … • To explore the role • To get a sense of the culture of the organisation – do I want to work here? • To give you an opportunity to review your own aspirations and skill set • To help you to focus on your career • To demonstrate your ‘match’ to the job …

  3. Performance vv Presentation • Performance captures everything about your time in the interview process … • Presentation focuses on the specific skills you may use …. • Here we look at the former … the next session looks at the latter …

  4. The ‘3 Cs’ of performance • Content • Communication • Credibility • What do YOU think these 3 Cs cover?

  5. The ‘3 Cs’ of performance • Content • Relevant to the focus of the job • Relevant to the seniority of the post • Detail of your input • Currency/contemporary status of your input

  6. The ‘3 Cs’ of performance • Communication • Verbal • Speak clearly and at medium pace • Do not use ‘sloppy’ language or slang • Listen carefully to the question, and ask interviewer to repeat the question if you are not sure • If you do not know the answer, say so honestly

  7. The ‘3 Cs’ of performance • Communication • Non verbal • Give appropriate eye contact to the interviewers • Sit with ‘open’ posture • Be conscious of your mannerisms (we all have them!) • Use silence to your advantage • Smile and look happy!

  8. The ‘3 Cs’ of performance • Credibility • Present a professional appearance in • Dress • Style • General grooming • ‘social’ behaviour, eg • greet and goodbye, shake hands • switch off mobile telephones • be on time!

  9. Don’t forget ……. • If your interview reaches beyond the tradition ‘question and answer’, the ‘3 Cs’ apply at every stage of the process. • For example if you are collected in a group before the interview to carry out a task, or if you are asked to join a ‘trial by orange juice’ group, this is part of the interview too, so remember the ‘3 Cs’!

  10. Good luck, and remember …. • See every interview as a development opportunity • Take time to reflect on your performance • Do not be shy of asking for feedback from the interview panel.
