The Brute DRAMA Tragedy Comedy
TRAGEDY • Definition– a play that ends unhappily • Tragic hero- the protagonist, usually a warrior or a king, with many admirable qualities • Tragic flaw- a personal flaw, such as pride, rebelliousness, or jealousy that leads the hero to a tragic end • Conflict- any type: man vs. man, man vs. self, man vs. society
COMEDY • Definition– a play that ends happily • Conflict-man vs. man (a matter of the heart) • Dialogue-conversation • Monologue-one person’s speech to others • Soliloquy-one person speech, alone on stage • Aside-spoken to audience or one character, but not heard by others • Stage directions- describe the setting and character’s actions
Opposites Attract Journal • What do you think of the expression “opposites attract?” Can you think of any movies, TV shows, or novel that are based on this idea? Have you seen any examples in real life?

Soliloquy Journal • Find one of Smirnov’s soliloquies in the play. Explain what is happening and why he is speaking to himself. • Can you find a monologue and an aside as well.
