Unidad 3 Lección 2 Unit 3 Chapter 2
Affirmative TÚ commandsRegular & Irregular • Telling someone (who you address in the tú form) to do something • Regular tú commands use the verb ending of the él/ella/usted form in the present tense. Escucha lo que te digo. Abre la puerta. Come tu arepa.
Irregular affirmative tú commands • These are eight irregular affirmative tú commands • They derive from the YO form of the present tense, eliminating the –go ending.
Object pronouns are always attached to the end of the affirmative commands. • Written accents may be required to preserve the original stress of the command. Escúchame. Listen to me. Hazlo ahora. Do it now. Escríbeme pronto. Write to me soon.
Negative TÚ commands: Regular & Irregular • When you are telling someone not to do something you use another form, a negative tú command. • To form the negative tú command, you take the yo form of the verb in the present tense and: • Change the ending to –es for –ar verbs. Ex: Dejar dejo ¡No me dejes los platos sucios! • Change the ending to –as for –er and –ir verbs. Ex: Creer creo Rodrigo, no creas que voy a olvidar los platos.
No escuches • No cuentes con él. • No hagas eso. • No pidas papas.
These verbs have negative tú commands that are irregular and are most common. • In negative tú commands, object pronouns always come directly before the verb. ¡No medigas! No te duermas ahora. no la escribas allí. No leshables ahora.
Usted / Ustedes Commands • When forming usted/ustedes commands are formed by adding the following: • -e / -en to –ar verbs • -a / -an to –er and –ir verbs.
These verbs that are most common have irregular usted/ ustedes command forms.
As with tú commands, object pronouns precede the verb in the negative commands and are attached to the end of the affirmative commands. • When attaching pronouns, accents are usually required to preserve the original stress of the infinitive. Denme la bolsa de papel. Give me the paper bag. Siéntense por favor. Sit down please. Nolopague. Don’t pay it. Nomemiren. Don’t look at me.
