Motivation fortheproject REBEL = REsponsibleBusiness E-Learning • Mankind is getting close to global limits • Quality of life is decreasing in many countries / for many people on our planet • Many systems are going to be changed or will be changed in the near future • Many loops will have to be closed • Many decisions will have to be made • We will need well prepared (educated) people understanding the economical, technical and ethical backgrounds! Motivation for the project /2 Responsible Business = Sustainable Business • Environmentally sustainable • preserve quality of the biosphere • Water • Air • climate / …..) • preserve natural stocks • Essential: ‚for ever‘ e.g. fish in the oceans • not substitutable: for generations (50…500 years) e.g. copper, phosphorus, rare earth metals WP 8 – Biotechnology for environmental protection

Changing systems – wwt sludge What is needed for the new system? • Install Bio-P system in all wwt-plants - the system already exists! • Install sludge incinerators (mono incinerators) • Reduce other pollutants (heavy metals, hormones) in waste water • Avoid sludge to be treated in MSW incinerators (=lost by dilution) WP 8 – Biotechnology for environmental protection

Changingsystems – wwtsludge How can we cause a change for better system? • Permits for waste incinerators based on treated mass • Execute existing ban of mixing for incinerators • Exclude (low polluted) sludge explicitly from incineration • Ban or reduce heavy metals and hormone-like substances as far as possible from water / sludge (= RoHS or equal) WP 8 – Biotechnology for environmental protection
