  1. The Enemies Self

  2. Gen 3:1-6Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God actually say, 'You shall not eat of any tree in the garden'?" And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, 'You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.'" But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.

  3. The Enemy: Self • Ecc 7:29 See, this alone I found, that God made man upright, but they have sought out many schemes. • We are to blame • We have clouded moral issues • We refused the straight way • It is our fault, not our fate, that we are sinful.

  4. The Enemy: Self • Prov. 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death. • Judges 17-21 • Gang rape • Dismemberment • Civil War leading to partial genocide • Kidnapping of girls to force them into marriage • Judges 17:6, 21:25: In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

  5. The Enemy: Self • Mark 7:20-23 And he said, "What comes out of a person is what defiles him. For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.“ • Every outward act of sin is preceded by an inward act of choice

  6. The Enemy: Self • 1Jn 2:15-17 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

  7. The Enemy: Self • James 1:13-15 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God," for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. • Don’t blame God re Eccl. 7:29 • By his own desire. • Temptation alone isn’t sin.

  8. “To be sure, as one develops more of a Christian ‘mind’, the frequency and power of temptation should grow less. But temptation will be a part of our experience, as it was the experience of the Lord himself (Heb. 2:18), throughout our time on earth. Christian maturity is not indicated by the infrequency of temptation but by the infrequency of succumbing to it.” ----Douglas Moo

  9. Solution? • Mat 16:24-25 Then Jesus told his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. • Gal 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

  10. Solution? • Rom 12:1-2I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
