My reason to choose these products • I have used both products myself, and just recently installed the newest version of OpenOffice on my work computer. • Why have I purchased Microsoft Office for myself? I needed software that anyone could open, with OpenOffice unfortunately that was not the case.

  4. History Microsoft Office Apache Open Office • The first version of MS Office was released in 1990 • MS Office sells at a rate of one copy per second • OpenOffice was first released in 2000 • The current version Apache OpenOffice has been downloaded over five million times so far

  5. Functionality Microsoft Office Apache Open Office Features include: • Microsoft Word • Microsoft Excel • Microsoft PowerPoint • Microsoft Access Features include: • OpenOffice Writer • OpenOffice Calc • OpenOffice Impress • OpenOffice Base

  6. Advantages MICROSOFT OFFICE • Full functionality • Product website with tutorials • Customer support • Very appealing design APACHE OPENOFFICE • Free download • Open source software can be customized to suit individual needs • Website with information and forums

  7. Disadvantages MICROSOFT OFFICE • Has to be purchased • Not customizable APACHE OPENOFFICE • Limited functionality • No customer support • Less appealing design

  8. Which one to choose? • Well, it depends. OpenOffice is similar to MS Office, but of course not identical. People familiar with either product can switch without too much difficulty. • One problem is that OpenOffice files sometimes cannot be opened by MS Office users without difficulty. (I never experienced the issue the other way around.)

  9. Continued… • If money is no object I would be inclined to purchase MS office, because it works and support is available. • However, if a company has a limited budget OpenOffice might be a viable option. • Another reason to choose OpenOffice would be idealism. It is a small ‘company’ and especially computer savvy users might appreciate the ability to actually access the source code and make changes to customize the software.
