  1. TRANSDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH PROPOSAL INTELLIGENT ENDOSCOPY “I-SCOPE” DR LEE YEONG YEH, DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE, PPSP

  2. INTRODUCTION The current GI endoscopy system has limitations including: • Controls are too rigid and not suitable for small Asian hands • Navigation is operator dependant • Diagnosis can be erratic • Archiving and Report is difficult

  3. SOLUTION? • A more intelligent endoscopy system • Joystick or button type of hand control • Navigation mapping and memory • In-built database for various diagnosis and suggestion of therapy with just a click or touch on-screen • Easier archiving and result generation

  4. OBJECTIVES • To create an intelligent endoscopic system (I-Scope) with enhanced functions including directing and suggesting endoscopic treatment, navigation and easier archiving and report generation • To create intelligent endoscopic ultrasound system (I-EUS) with 3D or 4D configurations and enhanced diagnostic functions • To test the usefulness of I-Scope and I-EUS in normal subjects, symptomatic patients, gastro-intestinal bleeding, disease staging etc

  5. INITIAL PLAN? • A brainstorming session will be conducted with engineers, software programmers and doctors to discuss on the creation of I-Scope and the preparation of prototype. Then we will invite the endoscopy manufacturers to discuss on the feasibility of manufacturing the endoscopic system prototype. • The prototype endoscopic system will be tested in normal subjects after informed consent by doctors. Subsequently the system will be tested in symptomatic subjects in clinical trial setting.

  6. EXPECTED OUTCOME? • We expect the creation of a future intelligent endoscopic system with less reliance on doctors and improved diagnostic functions. • We expect endoscopy services will increase tremendously in volume around the world but limited trained doctors. • Therefore the availability of an intelligent system will enable more less trained doctors to use the system in a wider scale.

  7. POSSIBLE PROBLEMS • QUESTIONS? • FEASIBILITY? • COST AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT? • TECHNICAL SUPPORT? • ACCEPTANCE BY MEDICAL COMMUNITY? • MANUFACTURING DIFFICULTIES?

  8. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION

  9. OTHER POTENTIAL GI PROJECTS • Use of honey in promoting healing of gastric and duodenal ulcers
