  3. I. Analyze Learners Seventh Graders 12-13 Years Old Will be familiar with 5-Step Writing Process

State Objectives Students will… RLA.O.7.1.03: classify the defining characteristics, build background knowledge and apply reading skills to understand a variety of literary passages and genres by West Virginia, national and international authors: [poetry] RLA.O.7.1.08: examine and interpret figurative language (hyperbole, simile, metaphor) and literary techniques (e.g., flashback, stereotype, foreshadowing) in text RLA.O.7.1.09: read, compare and interpret types of poetry (e.g., narrative poems, ballads, lyric, epic), and recognize the elements to derive meaning of poetry.

State Objectives continued… RLA.O.7.2.04: use the five-step writing process (pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, publishing) to generate topics, plan approaches, and develop expository and persuasive writing tasks: [poetry] RLA.O.7.2.05: from a prompt use the five-step writing process to develop a focused composition that contains specific, relevant details and vivid and precise words. 21C.O.5-8.1.TT9: Student uses telecommunications tools (e.g., email, web pages, blogs, discussion groups, list-servs, etc.) to learn academic content and to gather, share and publish information to various audiences.

Select Media/Materials continued… Web Resources • Poets.org – For the teacher to find poem examples. • Yahoo Music Lyrics- For the students to find lyrics for activity. • The Teacher's Corner- For the teacher for “Song to a Poem” activity. • Kid Pub- For both the teacher and students to submit and then review poem.

  8. IV. Utilize Media/Materials • Day 1: Introduction of Unit • “Fact or Fiction?” Poetry PowerPoint • Statements based on stereotypes • Find out what students already know • Day 2: What is Poetry? • Discuss Basic Poetry Terms • Meter • Rhyme • Line • Stanza • Assign Poetry Scavenger Hunt

  9. Utilize Media/Materials continued… • Day 3: Where is Poetry? • Poetry Scavenger Hunt Results • Poetry is Everywhere • Assign Song to a Poem Activity • Day 4: How does Poetry sound? • Read lyrics as a poem with partner • Oral expression of poetry • Volunteers may read poems in front of class

Utilize Media/Materials continued… • Day 5: Figurative Language • Figurative Language Worksheet • Simile • Metaphor • Hyperbole • Imagery • Day 6: More Figurative Language • Five small groups • Each group assigned a literary device • Write a short poem • 6-10 lines • Use literary device at least 3 times • Present to class

  12. Utilize Media/Materials continued… • Day 8: Individual Poetry Assignments • 5 Step Writing Process • Two Poems • Share a theme • Different types (haiku, ode, limerick, etc.) • At least 3 examples of figurative language • 15 lines or more • Begin Pre-writing (Free Write and Brainstorming)

  13. Utilize Media/Materials continued… • Day 9: Peer Editing • Two Rough Drafts of Each Poem • Groups of three students • Trade drafts of poems • Complete Peer Editing worksheets • Day 10: Publish Poetry • Bring in final drafts of poems • Submit one poem on-line

  14. IV. Require Learner Participation • Group Projects • Cooperation • Individual Assignments • Work independently • Peer Feedback • Interact and critique each other’s work

Evaluate and Revise • RLA.O.7.1.03- • Discussion of numerous types of poetry by diverse poets throughout history • RLA.O.7.1.08- • Discussion of figurative language • Students will also use figurative language in poems that they write in groups and on their own • RLA.O.7.1.09- • Venn diagram to compare different genres of poetry • Categorize poems onto the Po-A-Tree

Evaluate and Revise continued • RLA.O.7.2.04- • Complete pre-writing and beginning steps together • Then students will continue steps to write poems independently • RLA.O.7.2.05- • Use 5-Step writing process when writing their two poems based on prompt • 21C.O.5-8.1.TT9- • Type out and submit poem to KidPub
