Mark Hankins grew up playing most sports in his native Iowa. As a high school student he played on golf, basketball and football teams, and was a member of the golf team at Iowa State University, where he graduated with a degree in psychology in 1993. He has coached at the University of Texas Arlington and Michigan State, where he led MSU to two Big Ten Conference titles. He went on to coach golf at the University of Iowa and is currently the Assistant Athletic Director there.

Mark Hankins IowaCoach of the Year Mark Hankins has been coaching university golf teams for most of his professional life. He has coached the programs at the University of Texas Arlington, Michigan State University, World University, and most recently at the University of Iowa. At Michigan State, he was twice named the Big Ten Coach of the Year. In the summer of 2014 he left coaching to become the University of Iowa's Assistant to the Athletic Director.
