DRIVING WITH HEARING LOSS: TIPS TO MAINTAIN SAFETY ON THE ROAD
Hearing loss is one of the most common health conditions amongst older adults. While approximately 45% adults over the age of 65 have hearing loss, roughly 25% of them use hearing aids. Many simply deny having hearing loss because they are unaware of it and others are afraid that admitting their hearing impairment or wearing a hearing device will make them look old and weird.
THERE ARE A FEW CONSIDERATIONS YOU WANT TO HEED IN ORDER TO MINIMISE THE IMPACT OF HEARING LOSS ON YOUR DRIVING.
Eliminate All Distractions • Hearing loss combined with the common distractions of driving can make an even riskier situation for the driver and the passengers. So, avoid distractions like; • Using a mobile phone, tablet or any other gadget • Eating or drinking • Reading street signs • Playing music or listening to the radio at loud volumes • Operate the air conditioner, heater or other controls • Using your phone through the car’s speakers
Use Visual Cues Wisely • When driving with impaired hearing, using your other senses can reduce the safety risk to some extent. Careful driving requires appropriate engagement of visual senses as most of the driving cues are visual such as traffic lights, direction indicators and brake lights. So, use your vision effectively with the following considerations; • Keep your windshield and windows clean. • Install an extended view mirror in your car to enhance your visibility into the car’s blind spots.
Use Appropriate Hearing Aids • Be sure to take the following precautions when wearing hearing aids in your car: • Wear your hearing aids at all times when behind the wheel as they are designed to greatly reduce background noises, thus help your mind focus on the road. • Keep a set of extra batteries so that your hearing doesn’t suffer when the battery in use, dies. • Get your hearing and your hearing device checked regularly to make sure your aids are functioning properly and compensating for your hearing impairment. While some clinics offer free invisible hearing tests, others may charge for comprehensive hearing assessments. Consult only with an experienced, reputed audiologist to ensure best hearing solution and care.
