8th Grade Science Do Now Tuesday, January 22, 2013 Using the periodic table, begin working on RM 23.
8th Grade Science Today’s Schedule Tuesday, January 22, 2013 Do Now Periodic Table Labeling Introduction to Project Finish RM 23 Essential Question Vocabulary How does the structure of matter affects its identity and properties? How does the structure of an atom determine how elements are arranged in the Periodic Table? Electron Proton Neutron Electron Cloud Electrical Charge Valence Electron Nucleus Reactivity
8th Grade Science Today we will… Tuesday, January 22, 2013 8.5(B) identify that protons determine an element's identity and valence electrons determine its chemical properties, including reactivity Objective: Students will review structures of atoms and valence electrons.
8th Grade Science Periodic Table Tuesday, January 22, 2013 • Above groups 1, 2, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, list the number of valence electrons in GREEN. • Next to periods 1-3 draw the number of ENERGY LEVELS. • Make a key at the bottom of your periodic table (teacher demonstrate)
NITROGEN FAMILY Group 5 • 5 electrons in the outer shell • Can share electrons to form compounds • Contains metals, metalloids, and non-metals
OXYGEN FAMILY Group 6 • 6 electrons in the outer shell • Contains metals, metalloids, and non-metals • Reactive
8th Grade Science Reactivity Tuesday, January 22, 2013 • Fold your periodic table so group 1 lines up with group 17. • How many valence electrons are in group 1? How many are in group 17? • Add those together. Do they have a full shell when they combine? • Compare group 2 with group 16, do you get the same results?
8th Grade Science Project Introduction Tuesday, January 22, 2013 • Important Dates: • January 25, materials list due • February 1, poster OR model due • February 4, Rough draft of essay (Pre-AP) • February 15, PROJECT DUE • Read over directions and rubrics • Finish RM 23
8th Grade Science Do Now Wed./Thurs, January 23 &25, 2013 • Tape half-sheet “Anticipation Guide” to page of INB. • Circle “A” if you agree with the statement. Circle “D” if you disagree. • Using a clicker, enter your answers. • Record score in capacity matrix.
8th Grade Science Today’s Schedule Wed./Thurs, January 23 &25, 2013 Do Now Physical Property Stations Density Lab Conclusion Questions Reading: Physical Properties After learning Anticipation Guide Essential Question Vocabulary How does the structure of matter affects its identity and properties? How does the structure of an atom determine how elements are arranged in the Periodic Table? Electron Proton Neutron Electron Cloud Electrical Charge Valence Electron Nucleus Reactivity
8th Grade Science Today we will… Wed./Thurs, January 23 &25, 2013 • 8.5 (C) interpret the arrangement of the Periodic Table, including groups and periods, to explain how properties are used to classify elements; • Objectives: • Students will identify and describe the physical properties: luster, malleability, magnetic, conductivity, and density. • They will be able to identify the different families on the periodic table and that the elements in the family share physical properties.
8th Grade Science Physical Properties Lab Wed./Thurs, January 23 &25, 2013 • Go to 4 stations and observe the physical properties: luster, malleability, magnetic, and conductivity of 5 different elements. • Record observations in data table. • Answer questions at each station.
8th Grade Science Definitions Wed./Thurs, January 23 &25, 2013 • Luster – the way an object or substance reflects light. Ex: glitters, sparkles, glossy, glassy, waxy, dull, metallic. • Conductivity – The ability to transfer heat or electricity through direct contact. • Malleability – The ability to be hammered into a thin sheet. Ex: silver is very malleable which makes it a good material for jewelry making
8th Grade Science Calculating the density Wed./Thurs, January 23 &25, 2013 With your table, calculate the density of each element. Remember: Density= Mass Volume
8th Grade Science Calculating the density Wed./Thurs, January 23 &25, 2013 • Using the triple-beam balance, measure the mass of each sample. • Record the mass. • To measure the volume, fill up the graduated cylinder with 20 mL of water. • CAREFULLY, drop the element in the water. • Subtract 20 mL from the new number on the graduated cylinder. • Record this number as the volume.
8th Grade Science Calculating the density Wed./Thurs, January 23 &25, 2013 • Using your calculator, calculate the density of the element. • Record the density.
8th Grade Science Density of an Element Wed./Thurs, January 23 &25, 2013 • Using the triple-beam balance, measure the mass of each sample. • Record the mass. • To measure the volume, fill up the graduated cylinder with 20 mL of water. • CAREFULLY, drop the element in the water. • Subtract 20 mL from the new number on the graduated cylinder. • Record this number as the volume.
8th Grade Science Density of an Element Wed./Thurs, January 23 &25, 2013 • Using your calculator, calculate the density of the element. • Record the density. • Read “Physical Properties” by yourself or with a partner.
8th Grade Science Conclusion Questions Wed./Thurs, January 23 &25, 2013 • COPY and ANSWER the following questions about density on page of your INB. • What is the formula for calculating density? • Did the samples of different elements have the same density? Why or why not? • Did the samples of the same element have the same mass? • Did the samples of the same element have the same mass? • Did the samples of the same element have the same density? • Why is density considered a physical property?
8th Grade Science Exit Activity Wed./Thurs, January 23 &25, 2013 • Tape half-sheet “Anticipation Guide” to page of INB. • Circle “A” if you agree with the statement. Circle “D” if you disagree. • Using a clicker, enter your answers. • Record score in capacity matrix.
