Belief in One God • * Believe in one god • * Hebrew name for god is YHWH • * Jews never pronounced considered “ TOO “ holy • * Jews practice Monotheism ( believe in one God) • * Believe that God had guided their history through relationships with Abraham , Moses , and other leaders.
Belief In Education • Teaching children the basic of Judaism has always been important in the Judaism Society • Older boys – but no girls studied with professional teachers to learn the religion.
Belief in Justice and Righteousness • * Important to the Jews’ religion are the ideas of justice and righteousness • * Justice to Jews means kindness and fairness in dealing with other people • * To Jews everyone deservers justice , even stranger and criminals • * Jews are expected to give aid to those who need it including the poor ,the sick , and orphans • * Jews are also expected to be fair in business dealing.
Belief in Obedience and Law 1 • Jews believe that God gave them these rules to follow • Most important law is the ten commandments • Jews believe Moses recorded a whole system of laws that God had set down for them to obey ( Mosaic Law) • Believe that god gave them these rules to follow • Most important law is the ten commandments • Mosaic Law governs how people pray and celebrate holidays • Jews are forbidden to work on holidays and on Sabbath ( seventh day on the week ) • Believe God created the world in 6 days and rested on the Sabbath or 7th • Jewish Sabbath begins Friday at sundown and ends at night fall Saturday , 7th day of the week
Belief in Obedience and Law 2 • Among the Mosaic Law are the rules about food that Jews can eat and rules that must be followed in preparing them • Jews cannot eat pork or shellfish • Laws say that meat has to be killed and prepared a certain way for them to eat • Today foods that have been prepared are called kosher , or fit • Jews who strictly follow the Mosaic Law are called Orthodox Jews • Other Jews choose not to follow many ancient laws are called Reform Jews • Conservative Jews fall between the other 2 groups • These are the 3 main groups in a Jewish Society Today

Many commentaries are found in Talmud • Many Jews consider them only 2nd to the Hebrew Bible in their significance to Judaism • Besides Torah, Hebrew Bible, and Commentaries many other documents also explain ancient Jewish beliefs • Most important are the Dead Sea Scrolls written by Jews over 2,000 years ago • until 1947 no one knew about the Dead Sea Scrolls • The scrolls include prayers, commentaries, letters and passages from the Hebrew Bible • Judaism influenced many religions around the world
