JCOMM Concept and Objectives • An intergovernmental body of technical experts • Combines the strengths and expertise of the meteorological and oceanographic communities • Jointly sponsored by WMO and IOC • Functions at global, regional and national levels • User oriented • Integrated marine observing, data management and services system • Extensive outreach programme • An implementation mechanism for global GOOS
Requirements and Interactions • Ongoing support for and response to WWW • Maintenance of the marine component of the WWW/GOS • Specialized public good marine services and products, including maritime safety services • Implementation mechanism for GOOS • Requirements set by OOPC and GSSC/COOP • Cross representation, GSSC, OOPC, Management Committee • Task Team on JCOMM/GSSC/GRA coordination • Support for GCOS • Implementation of ocean components of IP • Interactions with CCl, CIMO, TCP • Marine climate, instrument testing, storm surges • Interactions with the research community • Transition of pilot projects to operations

Ocean Observing System and GODAE • JCOMM already coordinates major components of the in situ ocean observing system • DBCP and Action Groups, including GDP, TIP and OceanSITES • SOT: VOS (including VOSClim), SOOP/XBT, ASAP • GLOSS • Current experimental systems and pilot projects will eventually be incorporated under an intergovernmental umbrella • Argo, gliders, etc • Coordination with the satellite operators on data requirements • New Task Team established, chair Eric Lindstrom • Coordination with regional elements and programmes • E-SURFMAR, E-ASAP, Ferrybox, GMES • Regional contributions to DBCP, SOOP • Long-term maintenance of the complete system a key issue • Basic infrastructure required by GODAE and beyond • Key role of JCOMMOPS
