  3. Program Vision The overarching goal of the UCSC Master’s/Credential Program is to develop teachers who are advocates for social justice dedicated to fostering equitable and effective schooling and life opportunities for all students.

  4. Our Guiding Principles We are committed to preparing future teachers to enact pedagogies that: • See students’varying abilities, interests and perspectives as resources for learning and teaching. • Include innovative approaches to instructional practices, lesson design, and performance assessment. • Engage their K-12 students with challenging content and standards. • Engage their K-12 students in the critical analysis of social justice issues aimed at building a just and democratic society.

Features of UCSC’s Teacher Education Program • Strong emphasis on preparing teachers to work with culturally and linguistically diverse students from a social justice perspective • Extensive classroom placements • Small University class sizes • Faculty involvement in program • Master’s Degree & Credential in 12 months

  6. Intensive Supervision Model • Exemplary classroom teachers hired full time as Supervisors of Teacher Education • Supervisors and Education Faculty work together • Frequent observations and feedback in classroom placement • Cohorts work together with a supervisor through the entire year

  7. Credential Options • Multiple Subjects (K-6 and 7/8) • Single Subjects (7-12) • English • Social Studies • Mathematics • Sciences • (e.g., biological sciences, geosciences, physics and chemistry) • Bilingual Authorization – Emphasis: Spanish

Program at a Glance • 5 quarters of coursework from Summer 2012 through Summer 2013. • Two student teaching placements (from part-time to full-time): MS: Primary (K-2) and Intermediate (3-5) SS: Middle and High School Placements begin August 2012 and end in June 2013 following District calendars.

Requirements Prior to Application/Entry • Prior to Application: • LiveScan Fingerprinting & Certificate of Clearance • Required to be submitted by January 15, 2012 • Prior to Entry: • CBEST (or equivalent) & CSET: • Register ASAP • If the CBEST or CSET exams have not been passed, please show proof of registration for the exams. • Passing results due by June 1, 2012

LiveScan Fingerprinting & Certificate of Clearance • Print LiveScan Form (see instructions within MA/Credential application) • Take form to LiveScan agency for fingerprinting process (see DOJ’s website for locations) • Access Certificate of Clearance application online through the CTC’s website (see instructions within MA/Credential application) • Do not apply for actual Credential Submit copy of completed LiveScan form & copy of Certificate of Clearance to the UCSC Education Dept. by: January 15, 2012

California Basic Skills RequirementCBEST • Deadline: June 1, 2012 • Priority application may be given to applicants who verify passing scores with their application • Basic Skills Requirement • Tests basic reading, mathematics, and writing skills • Computer or paper-based exams held every-other month. (Next exam in Dec. 2011) • Additional option for Multiple Subject applicants: • Pass all three subtests of the CSET: Multiple Subjects examination plus the CSET: Writing Skills test CBEST WEBSITE

California Subject Examinations for TeachersCSET • Deadline: June 1, 2012 • Priority application may be given to applicants who verify passing scores with their application • CSET - Exam must be passed to meet CA Subject Matter Requirement. • Tests competency in credential subject area. • Two to four subtests required depending on subject area. • Tests administered once every-other month (Next exam in Jan. 2012) • If the CSET exams have not been passed, please show proof of registration for the exams.   16. Application Components • Statement of Purpose • Letters of Recommendation (3-5) • Academic Writing Sample • Personal History • Current resume • Bilingual Authorization – Additional essay in Spanish. Interview in Spanish, once accepted into MA/Credential Program

Strong Statement of Purpose • Passion for teaching, working with youth, and working with culturally diverse students and communities • Commitment to education for social justice and equity • Include experience in all of the above • Explain inconsistencies in your academic record. • Strong writing skills

  18. Statement of Purpose (cont.) • Include Application Prerequisites: • Experience or coursework addressing cultural and linguistic diversity. • Documented field experience in a formal or informal education setting.

Letters of Recommendation • 3 required - up to 5 allowed • Request letters of recommendation, that together, cover the following areas: • Experience working with youth in a formal or informal educational setting • Academic qualifications (from 1-2 University Instructors) • Course work or field experience that addresses the cultural & linguistic diversity found in the U.S. Must be submitted on-line by recommenders (see online application for instructions)

  20. Academic Writing Sample • Can be a paper from a previous course • Choose content that will enhance your application by showing relevant skills, knowledge or experiences • Examples: Papers written for education related courses, papers or articles written in your content area. • No more than 10 pages, should include formal citations and a bibliography

  21. Personal History • Write a statement explaining how your personal history has influenced your decision to pursue a graduate degree. • Include any relevant educational, familial, cultural, economic or social experiences, challenges or opportunities. • This should not duplicate the Statement of Purpose.

  22. Resume • This is not an employment resume. • Focus on your relevant educational and work experience. • Include any relevant volunteer or community work. • Include any awards or honors.

Bilingual Authorization Applicants • Submit essay in Spanish (up to 3 pages) as described in online application on page 10. • Interview (in Spanish) once accepted in MA/Credential Program. • Prior to program completion, to qualify for Bilingual Authorization, candidates must provide passing verification for: • CSET LOTE: Spanish Subtest III (#147) • - Language and Communication • CSET LOTE: Spanish Subtest V (#258) • - Geographic and Historical Contexts; Sociopolitical and Sociocultural Contexts • Students are advised to take CSET LOTE exams prior to entrance in the program or during the January or March test dates. • Final test date May 2013

  24. Follow Through on Application • Save your application each time you work on-line until you submit the finished product. • Check the site after you submit the completed application to be sure all documents have been uploaded correctly. • Contact the UCSC Graduate Application Processing Center if anything is missing (gradadmin@ucsc.edu)

Graduate Student Loan Awards (from Financial Aid Office 2011-2012) • Yearly Maximum is $20,500 (this includes both summersfor the Master’s/Credential Program) $8,500 = Subsidized $12,000 = Unsubsidized $20,500 Total The Graduate Plus Loan can be borrowed to cover the difference not covered by the yearly maximum of loans up to the Cost of Attendance. • Interest accrues while enrolled.

  35. Cal Grant - Continuing Recipients • Students who receive CAL Grant A or B are eligible to request a one year extension of the award for attendance in a credential program. • See Financial Aid website for more information.

  36. APLE Loan Forgiveness Program(Assumption Program for Loans in Education) • Competitive Teacher Incentive program to encourage students to teach in critical teacher shortage areas: • Math, Science and Special Education • Low Income school • Low Performing schools • Rural area schools, etc.

  37. APLE Loan Forgiveness • Students who qualify may have up to $11,000 in outstanding educational loan balances forgiven for teaching in Teacher Shortage Areas. • Math, Science and Special Education teachers in the lowest performing schools may have an additional $8,000 forgiven.

  38. Eligible Applicants • Be legal residents of California • Have received or approved to receive student loans through higher ed. inst. • Not be in default on any federal or state loans. • Not yet completed coursework for initial credential. • Must teach in teacher shortage area for 4 years.

  39. UCSC APLE Awards • 2010-11: • Guaranteed funding for 35. • 55 applied. • 2011-12: • Guaranteed funding for 44. • 43 applied. • Applicants will receive official notification from CSAC in July 2012 by means of contract. (Funding is contingent on State Budget allocations from year to year.)

  40. Teach Grant • Math, Science, and Bilingual Authorization students may be eligible for $4,000 per year (while in the program) if they plan to teach in specific high-needs areas. • Must have a minimum of 3.25 GPA eligibility requirement. • Be a U.S. citizen. • Eligible students will be contacted prior to the start of the program.
