  4. Self Belief: • We are ALL smart. • This should be VALIDATED early in life. • CHESS as a pretext for this.

  5. A Chess Club: • A place where the “I AM SMART” belief can be validated.

  6. Support for chess: • 13/3/12 – EU parliament recommend Member states introduce chess in schools. • Studies show the benefits of chess to children’s development.

  8. Chess & academic skills: • Dr. A de Bruin’s work .. Expert players have advanced STUDY techniques: • Self monitor , identify weak points. • Self regulate , correct them.

  9. How to teach chess: • Structured learning environment. • It’s a game – fun & enjoyment. • Skills development is VOLUNTARY.

  16. When to start chess ? Before their self image is fixed. • “I am smart” if they believe it, they prove it.

  17. More Studies : • The New Brunswick study is not an isolated result .. Studies started in 1965 (DeGroot). • (e.g.) A Texas study 1994 – 97: found that chess players showed twice the improvement in Reading and Math.

  18. Self-Belief • Chess expertise and academic success .. If they believe they are SMART then they’ll prove it.

  19. Try Chess : • It’s Easy and it’s Fun. • The best teachers are not the best players.
