Problem Statements • Increase the efficiency of organic waste management • Accelerate the decomposition of biodegradable waste into useable compost • Produce an attractive product for the growing “green” market
Solution Concept • A device that converts biodegradable waste into compost. • Compost – Organic fertilizer that is rich in nutrients • Vermicomposting (use of worms) will be enhanced through mechanical control systems.
Project Goals • Minimize household waste • Efficiently decompose bio-degradable waste • Cost effective and suitable for home use • Marketable
Commercially Available Compost System • System is being tested • Lack of mechanical components • Potential to increase efficiency
Design Parameters Prototype Design must: • Inexpensive, overall • Easy to use • Compact in size • Work autonomously • Work cleanly • Not attract unwanted insects or pests
Concept Alternatives Pros: Cons: Concept 1: • Large shredding area • Compact shape • Quick shredding time • Larger shredding mechanism
Concept Alternatives Pros: Cons: Concept 2: • Small shredding mechanism • Large shredding area • Large, non-compact shape • Slow shredding time
Proposed Design • Concept 1 will be chosen for the design base. • Add-ons include: • Solar Cells • Battery Pack • Electronic Sensors • Cooling fan
Conclusion • Commercially available system is being tested • Ambient regulation is currently in progress • Ultimate goal: market competitive product
