  1. Compressed Gases - Retraining Tim Styranec Chemical Storekeeper

  2. Why Here Why Here - Had training last three years. Have retraining once a year. Thank you - for working for the dept. each year Excellent job, great having experienced people.

  3. Agenda/Review • Sign In Sheet - Put on time card • Review • Chemical Storage - Cabinets- Flamm, Corr. - Prep Rooms • Waste- red cans, use form, other • More organized - what need is in the prep rooms • Safety & Emergency- 911 • Mercury spills • Gloves - nitrile

  4. Chemical Hygiene Plan LAW -Chemical Hygiene Plan developed from Lab Safety Stand. Requires Training, why here today. Last year Flammables. This training session concentrates on Compressed Gases u sedin some teaching but mostly research. Special type of hazard.

  5. Four Ways to Compress Gases The purpose of gas cylinder is to "squeeze down" the space needed to store gases. Works more efficiently but creates a great deal of pressure. That pressure can become dangerous.

  6. Four Ways to Compress Gases • 1. Standard or straight gases - substance squeezed but still in gas form. • Ex. air, argon, Hydrogen • 2. Liquefied Gases - works with gases that condense at ordinary temperatures or between pressures of 2000 - 2500 lbs. of pressure. • Ex. Ammonia, Chlorine ,Propane

  7. Four Ways to Compress Gases • 3. Dissolved gases - Gas is unstable in pure form. • Ex. acetylene in acetone • 4. Cryogenic Materials - substances with boiling points below -238F. • Ex. Liquid Nitrogen, Liquid Helium

  8. Hazards Hazards - Booklet - Reviews - Working with Hazardous Materials 1. Pressure - 2500 lbs pressure  2. Equipment and Cylinder related –  3. Temperature - L Nitrogen - 238 degree F, SOP For Liquid Nitrogen - SHOW.

  9. Chemical Hazards Chemical Hazard Categories - Inert materials - displaces Oxygen - Nitrogen, Helium -asphyxiation Toxic - cause adverse health effects - CO, Phosgene Flammable - fire explosion risk - Hydrogen  Reactive - Corrosive - erode flesh or equipment- Chlorine

  10. Other Dangers Oxidizers - react with flamm/combustibles - Oxygen  Oxygen is not AIR Cryogenic - COLD - boil off vapor can freeze human tissue. Materials become brittle Large vapor volume produced, 1 gal LOX =860 gal O2 gas USE - Safety glasses, face shield, gloves

  11. Proper Storage Procedures- General Cool dry well ventilated place Secure upright Strap into place Keep safety caps on till connections made Keep out of direct sunlight Keep Flammables and Oxidizer apart Many gases should be kept away from electrical equipment.

  12. Markings & Labeling Cylinders have identifying labels and stencils Paint color is not an indicator

  13. Safe Cylinder Handling - always read MSDS Never drag across floor DO NOT hand roll Use 4-wheel cart Caps must be on cylinder DO NOT ride elevator with cylinder Use clamps to secure cylinder in place DO NOT stick objects into cap holes

  14. Connections & Fittings - Regulators - reduces high level of pressure to safe usable level - # For each gas CGA Fitting - connects to the cylinder valve to allow gas to be withdrawn - male/female No adapters - use correct fitting Safety Release Devices - prevent rupture and immediate/violet release of pressure (fire) Allow for controlled release of material

  15. Leak Detection Suspected gas leak should be reported - Me, office Any bad condition also should be reported - corroded cylinder, rust etc. Test for Leaks - cover surface with diluted soap solution - tighten or correct fitting

  16. Safety Procedure and Emergency info. Read the MSDS -- what to wear, how stored, how to handle properly and safely. Read Labels Emergency Procedure - 911, 3333, 3700 EOHS, 3665.  You are the only person who can make the area you work safe as possible.

  17. VIDEO - Handling Compressed Gas Cylinders -- QUIZ Departmental Ordering/Return Procedure Questions????????? What working with Dangerous - Take time - PLAN
