Experience Whatis the biggest number you can think of? Place value is the value of a digit depending on its position in the number, such as ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands place. Carousel: 4 posters (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands) Students will move about the room and write a number on each poster ending in the designated place value; ones, tens, hundreds, or thousands. This will be used as a pre-assessment, and a segue into the BrainPop Jr. video that will be watched at home. In it, students will find out about place value and explore different numbers. What: • Students will watch a video clip ofplace value at home. • Place Value • Students should pay close attention to the information introduced in the video so that they are able to answer five reflective questions at the beginning of the next class.
So what: • Class will discuss any questions or comments on the BrainPop video. • Students will then complete a short 5 question assessment at the beginning of class, and then peers will collectively review questions on the Smartboard. • BrainPopJr Quiz
Now What: • Demonstration • Students will apply their knowledge of what was learned by demonstrating different place values using cubes, longs, flats, and big cubes. • As students are demonstrating, they will assess their peers by asking questions about the demonstration. • Students will respond on their whiteboards, keeping all students engaged in the demonstration.
