  1. Save our Ozarks! by Paul Wright

  2. The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones that do…

  3. Ozark Beauty- Before

  4. Ozark de-beauty-After Six metal towers, ranging from 130 feet to 160 feet tall would be placed every mile along the proposed routes. A 150-foot wide right of way will also be required, much of it over very rough terrain.

  5. Here’s what the new state license plate should look like…Arkansas, the new Un-Natural State • The Un-Natural State

  6. Life in Eureka • I moved to Eureka Springs in 1978 as a sophomore in high school and lived with my parents and younger brother just north of ES out on old highway 23 (now known as route 222). My father retired the year before and my Mother found an ad in Mother Earth News for 45 acres for sale and it set a stage to escape from the industrialism of Southwest Louisiana in which I was born and raised. At that time, in 1977, Lake Charles, Louisiana was one of the highest cancer rate cities in the nation and it was my parent’s decision to retire to a clean, pristine, serene environment with majestic mountain views, clean air, and a healthy lifestyle. We moved and on top of the 45 acres, my parents built a custom log home in which they still live in after 35 years. In this sanctity and escape from noise and pollution, they have the peace, serenity, and comfort of relaxing and gazing out onto the wilderness of the Ozark mountain range fortified by nature’s oaks, pines, hickory, and other plant life. It has always been and will continue to be their goal to not have this interrupted now or even after they’re gone. Which is why I write this on behalf of all my brothers, we will not stop the movement of preventing this SWEPCO project that has threaten our parents way of life and other local property owners. We will, by law, prevent the deforestation of the Ozarks just for the love and greed of power and money. Specifically when there are other alternatives and options. We will not allow the staple of NW Arkansas’ tourism, the scenic mountain views succumb to another movement of industrialism. We will fight to “Save our Ozarks!

  7. Paul’s commentary • Besides the slogan-tag Natural State becoming The Un-natural state, besides the 160 ft. metal grid towers, cables, 300 yard wide stripping the earth and majestic Ozark scenery, besides the loss of wildlife habitation and destruction debris besides, the decline in tourism (5.7 billion annually), it’s truly the health concerns of property owners (human life), wildlife, fish, and game from the EMF’s of the High Voltage Power lines, transformers, and other possible unhealthy or unknown components.

  8. Proposed Route # .Too close for HVP and EMFs Wright Home #1 Wright Home #2

  9. N.I.M.B.Y. I can’t bear to look that way…I used to love the views…What’s that buzzing?

  10. Arkansas, the land of opportunity

  11. EMF’s (electronic magnetic fields) • High Health Risks living near High Voltage Power Lines

  12. Electric Fields, Magnetic Fields & Power Lines are a Health Hazard! • There is no question that power transmission apparatus emit electromagnetic fields (EMFs). • An EMF is not just one thing, but two kinds of fields: • Electrical field: the part of the EMF that can easily be shielded. • Magnetic field: part of the EMF that can penetrate stone, steel and human flesh. In fact, when it comes to magnetic fields, human flesh and bone has the same penetrability as air! • Both fields are invisible and perfectly silent: if you live in an area with electric power, cell phone service, water pipes and more, some level of artificial EMF is surrounding you.

  13. Living Close to Power Lines and How EMFs Harm Human Health • Your body acts like an energy wave broadcaster and receiver, incorporating and responding to EMFs. In fact, scientific research has demonstrated that every cell in your body may have its own EMF, helping to regulate important functions and keep you healthy. • Strong, artificial EMFs like those from power lines can scramble and interfere with your body’s natural EMF, harming everything from your sleep cycles and stress levels to your immune response and DNA!

  14. Studies Show Living Next To Power Lines Increases The Risk Of Cancer • After hundreds of international studies, the evidence linking EMFs to cancers and other health problems is loud and clear. High Voltage power lines are the most obvious and dangerous culprits, but the same EMFs exist in gradually decreasing levels all along the grid, from substations to transformers to homes. From the British Medical Journal, June, 2005: • Researchers found that children living within 650 feet of power lines had a 70% greater risk for leukemia than children living 2,000 feet away or more. • From Epidemiology, 2003 Jul;14(4):413-9: • “Several studies have identified occupational exposure to extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields (EMF) as a potential risk factor for neurodegenerative disease.” • From Epidemiology, 2002 Jan;13(1):9-20 • There is “strong prospective evidence that prenatal maximum magnetic field exposure above a certain level (possibly around 16 mG) may be associated with miscarriage risk.”

  15. From the Internal Medicine Journal, 2007 • In a study of 850 lymphoma, leukemia and related conditions, researchers from the University of Tasmania and Britain's Bristol University found that living for a prolonged period near high-voltage power lines increased the risk for these conditions later in life. • People who lived within 328 yards of a power line up to age 5 were five times more likely to develop cancer as an adult. • People who lived within 328 yards of a power line at any point up to age 15 years were three times more likely to develop cancer as an adult. • Dr. David Carpenter, Dean of the School of Public Health (SUNY), believes that up to 30% of all childhood cancers come from exposure to high voltage power lines. • Even the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cautions citizens that "There is reason for concern" and advises “prudent avoidance” of high voltage power lines.

  16. The California Department of Health • The California Department of Health concluded that EMFs were responsible for an increase in childhood leukemia, adult brain cancer, Lou Gehrig's disease and miscarriage in the 2002 report, “An Evaluation of the Possible Risks From Electric and Magnetic Fields (EMFs) From Power Lines, Internal Wiring, Electrical Occupations and Appliances.” • The studies cited above and dozens of other epidemiological studies specifically link high voltage power lines with: • Brain tumors • Leukemia • Birth defects • Lymphoma

  17. No Leukemia!

  18. Electromagnetic Radiation and Power Lines. It‘s a Problem. • According to research and publications put out by the World Health Organization (WHO), EMF such as those from power lines, can also cause: • Headaches • Fatigue • Anxiety • Insomnia • Prickling and/or burning skin • Rashes • Muscle pain

  19. You Need EMF Shielding From Electrical Power Lines & Transformers! • High voltage power lines, and radiation are something that can affect urban and rural communities alike. In truth, few residential areas escape this threat. For now, it’s critical to understand your risk of living close to power lines and how protect the area around you.

  20. Solar Power vs. High Voltage Power? The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers engineer, in effect, told the judge (and the PSC) they will not make the land available for the transmission line because other practical alternatives in the area are available.

  21. Cancer Research Hospital? • The estimated costs for the three routes range from $96.3 million to $117.4 million to construct. • The estimated costs of creating a new NW Arkansas Cancer treatment facility $200 million plus the annual operating estimated costs of 24 million is what SWEPCO should also budget for due to the increase in cancer.
