Laser photocoagulation is the treatment of choice for treshold retinopathy of prematurity (ROP)
LASER treatment We treated 50 eyes of 25 babies with diode Laser (810 nµ) or green Laser (532 nµ) from July 2000 to October 2005.
44 eyes ROP stage 2-3 plus 6 eyes ROP zone I (AP-ROP) The International Classification of Retinopathy of Prematurity Revisited An International Committee for the Classification of Retinopathy of Prematurity* Arch Ophthalmol. 2005;123:991-999.
AP-ROP Different from classic ROP
AP-ROP • Zone I • Flat network neovascularization • Naked shunts • Early plus • No stages • Rapidly progressive
AP-ROP Plus is indication to laser
Laser Treatment Parameters: Power 150-200 mW Duration 0.1-0.2 sec. Number 1500-2000 spots
Laser treatment The pattern of Laser photocoagulation burns to the avascular retina is : -confluent or -near confluent to avoid skip areas.
Laser treatment Laser photocoagulation was performed under general anesthesia
RESULTS 42 favorable outcome (84%) 4 eyes progress to stage 4 A 4 eyes progress to stage 5
RESULTS 6 eyes AP-Rop 2 favorable outcome (34%) 4 unfavorable (66%)
CONCLUSIONS Laser photocoagulation is associated with a good anatomic outcome. ROP more posterior is difficult to treat successfully with ablative therapy.
