Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions on text and issues, building on other’s ideas and expressing their own clearly. • Wednesday: Writing Day • Obj/Std: Use a writing process to develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, drafting, revising, editing, rewriting, • Thursday: Theme Focus • Obj/Stds: Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary of the text. • Friday: Vocab/Grammar • Objs/Stds: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation and spelling when writing

  2. Daily Writing: Imagination 11/5/12 Choose one prompt to respond to and explain with detail: • “I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells.   3. Monday: New Quarter! Slide 1/2 • It’s the start of a new quarter! I want to start off on a good foot… • My philosophy of education! • Learn 1+1=2 and the different parts of speech… • Learn how to LEARN! • Responsibility & Initiative • Socialize, Communicate & Work with others • Critically think • Think of being a student as your JOB. • Come to class on time and ready to learn with my folder, notebook, journal, pen/pencil, homework & novel. • Classroom Contract • If you don’t want to fully commit to this contract, we can meet this week and draw up a special contract that everyone involved can be confortable with. • Student Council! If you’re interested, and you meet the requirements, write your full name, class, and brief explanation of why you’re interested (1 or 2 sentences) and give it to me by 2:30 today.

  4. Monday: Novel Study Slide 2/2 • Hoot first for 1st period. Tangerine first for 6th period. Then we’ll switch! • Novel summary… • Review new vocab. Write these in your notebook! Notebook title: Vocab III • Popcorn read and work on study guide questions. • Quiz Friday on vocab III, study guide questions III and whatever else we accomplish this week. 

For those of you I give books, you need to replace it.   8. Daily Writing: Trick 11/7/12 Choose one prompt to respond to and explain with detail: • How do you feel when you play a trick on someone? Explain the most recent or best trick you’ve played on someone. • “Life is pretty simple: You do some stuff. Most fails. Some works. You do more of what works. If it works big, others quickly copy it. Then you do something else. The trick is the doing something else.” ~Leonardo da Vinci

Wednesday: Writing Focus Slide 1/4 • General comments about your writing: • Avoid “So” and “Then” to start your sentences. • Capitalize the pronoun “I.” • Add variety to your sentence structure (use complex sentence with commas & semicolons). • Volunteers to read their 5-paragraph essay on cell phones? • That was a timed writing… Today, we’re going to start a longer process that starts with planning.

  10. Wednesday: Writing Focus Slide 2/4 • Read Student A example essay on why cats are better than dogs. • Put a star next to the thesis and underline each topic sentence. • What do you notice about this essay? What did the writer do well? What can they improve on?

  11. Wednesday: Writing Focus Slide 3/4 • Journal title: My Outline • Take a few minutes to choose a topic and write it in your journal. Make a school issue the central focus of your essay. A couple ideas: • Some argue that summer vacation is no longer necessary as Americans are not busy working the farms during the summer months. Take a stance on this issue, discussing how summer vacation is beneficial or, instead, how summer vacation is hurting students. • Some argue about homework. While homework is common in most schools, some contend that it shouldn't be. Discuss the concept of homework, exploring whether it is beneficial and how engaging in large amounts of homework could actually take away from family time.

  12. Wednesday: Writing Focus Slide 4/4 • Next, write the Roman numerals I, II, and III, spread apart down the left side of the page. • Next to each Roman numeral, write the main ideas that you have about your topic, or the main points that you want to make. • Under each Roman numeral, write A, B, and C down the left side of the page. • Next to each letter, write the facts or information that support that main idea. • Planner: • Finish outline by tomorrow if didn’t finish in class. • Read and finish study guide questions part 3 by Friday • Quiz on Friday – study vocab and study guide questions part III!

  13. Daily Writing: Why? 11/8/12 Choose one prompt to respond to and explain with detail: • Why is it important to be honest? Pretend you are getting this question from a 3-year-old and keep explaining WHY! • Why is important to have good manners? Pretend you are getting this question from a 3-year-old and keep explaining WHY!

  14. Thursday: Theme Focus Slide 1/12 • Student Council Candidates: Speak on Friday during the assembly! • What is a THEME? • Quiz tomorrow on vocab III, study guide questions III and whatever else we accomplish this week. 

  15. Thursday: Theme Focus Slide 2/12 Take Cornell Notes! Theme: The underlying meaning, idea or lessonof a literary work

  16. Thursday: Theme Focus Slide 3/12 • Basic Characteristics: • A theme may be stated or implied • Theme differs from the subject or topic of a literary work in that it involves a statement or opinion about the topic • Not every literary work has a theme • Themes may be major or minor

  17. Thursday: Theme Focus Slide 4/12 • A major theme is an idea the author returns to time and again; it becomes one of the most important ideas in the story • A minor theme is an idea that may appear only periodically

  18. Thursday: Theme Focus Slide 5/12 • It is important to recognize the difference between the theme of a literary work and the subject of a literary work. • The subject is the topic on which an author has chosen to write • The theme, however, makes some statement about or expresses some opinion on that topic

  19. Thursday: Theme Focus Slide 6/12Example The subject of a story might be war while the theme of that same story might be the idea that war is useless.

  21. Thursday: Theme Slide 8/12How Do Authors Express Themes? 2) Themes are presented in thoughts and conversations. Authors put words in their character’s mouths only for good reasons. One of these is to develop a story’s themes. The things a person says are frequently on their mind. Look for thoughts that are repeated throughout the story.

  22. Thursday: Theme Slide 9/12 How Do Authors Express Themes? 3) Themes are suggested through the characters. The main character usually illustrates the most important theme of the story. A good way to get at this theme is to ask yourself the question, what does the main character learn in the course of the story?

  23. Thursday: Theme Slide 10/12 How Do Authors Express Themes? 4) The actions or events in the story are used to suggest theme. People naturally express ideas and feelings through their actions. One thing authors think about is what an action will "say". In other words, how will the action express an idea or theme?

  24. Thursday: Theme Slide 11/12How Do Authors Express Themes? • Through the feelings of the main character • Through thoughts and conversations • Through what the main character learns • Through specific actions or events

  25. Thursday: Theme Slide 12/12 • Popcorn read short story, “All Summer in a Day.” • Journal title: Theme What is the theme of this story? How does the author express the theme using the four different ways? • Planner: • Finish reading the short story & theme journal writing by Monday. • Tonight (due tomorrow): • Read & finish study guide questions (Hoot/Tangerine) part III. • STUDY part III vocab & questions for quiz.

  27. Vocab/Grammar Friday! • Quiz • NO TALKING! If you talk or your eyes wander, I’ll take points off your test (even if you’ve handed it in). If I truly suspect cheating, you will receive a zero. • No getting up! Raise your hand! • When you’re finished, raise your hand, and quietly read or study for another midterm after I’ve collected your midterm. • Give me your notebook. • When I’ve collected your quiz: • 7B Hoot: Copy the vocab words and definitions into your notebook. Notebook title: Hoot Vocab IV. Then, write sentences using each word. Notebook title: Vocab IV sentences • 7A Tangerine: Try to guess the word based on the context clues given. After you’ve made an educated guess, use the dictionary to look up each word and determine if you’re correct. Write the word and the correct definition in your notebook. Notebook title: Tangerine Vocab IV. • Planner due Monday: • Vocab IV assignment in your notebook • Theme writing in your journal • Any other assignment you were unable to get done in class.
