Main Idea of Paragraphs Studying in a different country is a new experience, but there are also some challenges. • Para. 1 • Para. 2 • Para. 3 • Para. 4 • Para.6 The first stage of culture-shock adjustment is “the honeymoon”. The second stage of culture shock, “the hostility stage”, eventually occurs. At this point, some defense mechanisms are devised to protect yourself against the effects of culture shock. The third stage of culture shock adjustment, “recovery”, starts.
Translation • The prospect of packing up everything and moving to a new and perhaps strange environment may appear interesting and challenging to an unmarried young man and appallingly difficult to a slightly older man with a wife and a small kid.
Four Questions • What is your interpretation of “culture shock”? (What kind of feelings? When? The cause.) • What are the four stages of adjustment? • What are the defense mechanisms? Explain. • What is the best method in your eyes to adjust to another culture? Offer your reasons.
