Textsinspiredby Food • Information and Library Service Students of VocationalEducational Centre in Seinäjoki took a challengingtask to research and findtexts in literature, mostFinnish, whichdeal with food and eating. • The taskwasn´teasy and the textsampleswerestrictlyelected. Therecouldbefunnynonsense-rhymes for children, fairy-tales, folk-tales, dreams of meals, situations in life when food wasimportantor the lack of it. During the jobtheybecameverycritical and as a finalresultwetogetherpostedabouttensamples of ourtextpiles to Kaisa Isotalo and herpupils in Seinäjoki Lyseo. • Wewanted to honoure.g. the Grand Old Lady of Finnishchildren´slyrics, Kirsi Kunnas, and herhilarious and ingeniouslimerick-inspiredverses. Textsinspiredby food • As a secondpart of the wholeprojectpupils of Seinäjoen lyseo( mostlyKaisa´spupils) cooked food duringtheir home economicslessons and hadourtexts as theirinspiration and example. • Presumably at least the texts of Kirsi Kunnas werefamiliar to them and watchingpotatoescook and dance in the kettlelike in the versesurelyraisedsmiles. • “I'm sweating and steaming I feel like screaming I'm bubbling and seething I'm rattling like tea-things the pan said -took his hat off his head – and Phew!” • The Pan and the Potatoesby Kirsi Kunnas, translated Herbert Lomas, the wholeversecanberead at the end of thispresentation Suvi Veijalainen 4/2014

Herebytherewas a greatopportunity for the pupils to getacquaintanted with severalherbs. • Freelytranslated the versebrings for you to taste an enormousbunch of herbslikecelery, thymian, mint, sage, parsley, basil, dill… - wonderful! But oh pity! The judge of flavour, Mr. Parsnipwanted to have the saffron, savory, chevril and as a finalcrown – the garlic! Suvi Veijalainen 4/2014

Itcontainsshort, humorous, sometimesabsurdstories ”from the kitchen and the bottoms of the kettles” as he callsthem. • Ourexamplewascalled ” The Teddybear Pasta”. Itwas a cutestory of a bagful of teddybear pasta, who´sgreatestwishwasthatsomeday a littlechildwouldeatthem. • Theywerewonderingwhethertheywouldbecrosted with ketchup orminchedmeator a creamsauce. Theyonlyknewthatwhateveritwouldbe, itwouldbeverygood and tasty. And anditwasworthwaiting for! Suvi Veijalainen 4/2014

  10. Textsinspiredby food • One day the waitingwasrewarded. The teddybear pasta wasboiled (theydon´tfeel pain!). Theygrew big and theygot on them a coat of yummyramsonspesto– sotheirmouths,eyes, ears, paws and tummieswereall in thismarvellouspesto. The wholecrowdwasfullfilled with joywhentheywereladled on the plate. Suvi Veijalainen 4/2014

Textsinspiredby food • In the future ”Textsconcerning food and eating” willbeused at schoolduring the home economicslessons to motivate and inspirate the pupils. • Perhapsthey´llfind new ways of cooking, findingrecipes in literatureand most of allbecomeinspired to examine and study the wideworld of culinary art.
