Will "All Israel" Be Saved? Text: Rom. 11:26
Intro • Many people today (and in times past) believe Israel (the • Jews) will still play a part in God’s redemptive plan and • will one day trump (or outlast) the church! • Part of the “Premillennialism” doctrine to many people • The “Budding Fig Tree” Doctrine – Mt. 24:32-36 • (CF: Mk. 13:28; Lk. 21:29-31) • They teach that Israel is the “fig tree” that “budded” and so within a generation Jesus will return, or the Rapture will begin. • The problem is in designating what a generation is: most scholars say it is 40 years, which then ended in 1988. • Then they say Israel became a nation with Jerusalem as its capital city in 1967 (after the 6-Day War), which its 40 years was up in 2007. So they now say it can be any time now! • Rom. 11:26: They use Mt. 24 with Rom. 11 and Jer. 11 to show “All Israel will be saved!” Will "All Israel" Be Saved?
Intro Rom. 11:26 26. and so all Israel will be saved; just as it is written, "THE DELIVERER WILL COME FROM ZION, HE WILL REMOVE UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB." • For about the past hundred years or so, men have tried to • use these words, and others, to establish the rise of Israel • Is that what Paul is saying? • Will Israel rise up as God’s chosen people once again? • Does fleshly Israel hold some trump card over the church when it comes to salvation? (Eph. 5:23; Col. 1:18) • The context deals mainly with the point that Israel has rejected Christ and that they were resting in their biological background. Will “all Israel” be saved at the 2nd Coming of Christ? Will "All Israel" Be Saved?
The Status of Israel Rom. 10:1 (NKJ) 1. Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. • The context in Rom. 11 reveals the following: • 11:11: their fall • 11:12: their failure • 11:15: casting away; from the dead • 11:17: branches broken off • 11:19: broken off • 11:20: broken off • 11:21: God spared not the natural branches • 11:22: on them that fell, severity The context is that Israel had fallen, failed, were cast away, broken off, were dead and were not spared – Their status before God was not a protected one! Will "All Israel" Be Saved?
“Israel” is Saved the Same as the Rest • To remove the “Budding of the Fig Tree” false doctrine, • one needs to properly understand Mt. 24-25: • Divided into 2 sections: • The two sections are separated by a time text – • Mt. 24:34: Jesus said, “This generation” would see the fulfillment, so everything discussed up to 24:34 would occur within that “generation.” • (Not a generation after 1948!) • Jesus uses the natural phenomenon of the fig tree (24:32) as a lesson in reading the times! (AD 70) Will "All Israel" Be Saved?
“Israel” is Saved the Same as the Rest Mt. 21:43 43. "Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people, producing the fruit of it. So if their status of God’s chosen people is removed, how are they saved? Rom. 11:26-27 (Is. 59:20-21; Jer. 31-34) 26. and so all Israel will be saved; just as it is written, "THE DELIVERER WILL COME FROM ZION, HE WILL REMOVE UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB." 27. "THIS IS MY COVENANT WITH THEM, WHEN I TAKE AWAY THEIR SINS." • Who was this Deliverer that takes away their sins? • It is Jesus (Mt. 1:21; Jn. 1:29) • What is this covenant? • It is the gospel (Rom. 1:16; Eph. 1:13). • Jer. 31:31-34: A “new covenant” unlike their former covenant • I Cor. 11:25: The “new covenant” is sealed in Christ’s blood! Will "All Israel" Be Saved?
“Israel” is Saved the Same as the Rest Rom. 11:25 25. For I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery--so that you will not be wise in your own estimation--that a partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in; How are the Gentiles and Jews saved? They are all saved the same way, by faith! (Rom. 3:29-30; Acts 15:9) Fleshly Israel is saved the same way as the Gentiles are – By hearing the gospel, believing the gospel & being baptized for forgiveness of sins! (Mk. 16:15-16; Acts 2:38; 22:16; Gal. 3:26-27) Will "All Israel" Be Saved?
How Can “All Israel” be Saved? The Scriptures teach that in the N.T. (New Covenant) fleshly Israel is not saved because of their biology (who they are as a people, or nation – Mt. 21:43) Rom. 11:2-4: As seen in Rom. 11:11-22 they are in a fallen state before God Rom. 11:5-7, 14: The “remnant” and “some” of fleshly Israel that will be saved are those that obey the gospel Will "All Israel" Be Saved?
How Can “All Israel” be Saved? • Rom. 11:17-24: The grafting in of the wild olive tree with • the cultivated olive tree • Rom. 1:16; 3:29-30; 11:20: Both Jew & Gentile grafted in by faith! • Rom. 11:28-32: Mercy granted to Jew and Gentile alike if obedient! • Some teach Rom. 11 & Jer. 11 show the new olive tree is not the church! Eph. 3:4-6 (Eph. 5:23; Col. 1:18: Grafted into the church!) 4. By referring to this, when you read you can understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5. which in other generations was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed to His holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit; 6. to be specific, that the Gentiles are fellow heirs and fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel, Will "All Israel" Be Saved?
How Can “All Israel” be Saved? • If these things be true how can “all Israel be saved?” • All Israel will be saved, but it is not all of fleshly Israel (Rom. 9:6-8) If not fleshly Israel, who are the children of Promise? Gal. 3:8-9, 26-29 (Eph. 1:7; Rom. 11:16-18) 8. The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, "ALL THE NATIONS WILL BE BLESSED IN YOU." 9. So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer. 26. For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27. For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's descendants, heirs according to promise. So “all Israel” that will be saved is made up of those that have obeyed the gospel through faith & baptized into Christ, being “grafted into the tree!” (Rom. 11:16-18) Will "All Israel" Be Saved?
Conclusion • Many people today (and in times past) believe Israel (the • Jews) will still play a part in God’s redemptive plan and • will one day trump (or outlast) the church) • They misunderstand, misuse, and abuse Mt. 24 & Rom. 11 and a host of other passages! I Thess. 4:16-18: No “rapture” for Jesus won’t set foot on the earth again when He returns, and after the resurrection of the dead and alive in Christ, the wicked will rise and after that the judgment! (Jn. 5:28-29; Acts 1:11; II Pet. 3:10-12) Will "All Israel" Be Saved?
Conclusion Both Jew and Gentile alike are called by the gospel and saved by faith through grace (Eph. 2:8-9; Gal. 3:8-9), are called Christians (Acts 11:26) and are in the church! (Eph. 3:6) Now all men must seek to be a part of the church – God’s chosen people, royal priesthood, and holy nation! I Pet. 2:9-10 9. But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God's OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10. for you once were NOT A PEOPLE, but now you are THE PEOPLE OF GOD; you had NOT RECEIVED MERCY, but now you have RECEIVED MERCY. Have you obeyed the gospel and been “grafted” into the “Cultivated Olive Tree?” Will "All Israel" Be Saved?
