Fairy Tale • A Folktale that usually includes magical elements. “Cinderella” handout
Humor • The quality of a literary work that makes the characters and their situations seem funny, amusing, or ludicrous. “Jabberwocky” pg 592
Mystery • Fiction that includes secrets or crimes to be solved. “The Vegas Victim” handout
Short Story • A brief fictional narrative in prose. “Thank You Ma’am” pg 62 “After Twenty Years” handout
Folklore • The traditional beliefs, customs, stories, songs, and dances of the ordinary people (the “folk”) of a culture. Folklore is passed down by word of mouth rather than in writing. • Legend, Mythology, Tall Tales, and Fables
Fable • A short simple tale that teaches a moral. The characters in a fable are often animals who speak and act like people. “Two Ways to Count to Ten” pg 722 “The Race Between Toad and Donkey” pg 730
Legend • A traditional story, based on history or an actual hero, that is passed down orally. A legend is usually exaggerated over the years. “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” pg 670
Mythology • A traditional story of unknown authorship, often involving goddesses, gods, and heroes, that attempt to explain a natural phenomenon. “Icarus and Daedalus” pg 646
Tall Tale • A wildly imaginative story, usually passed down orally, about the fantastic adventures of folk heroes in realistic local settings. “Sally Ann Thunder Ann Whirlwind” pg 712
Folk Tale • A story that has been passed from generation to generation by word of mouth. Generally set in the distant past and involve supernatural events. Characters animals, humans, or superhuman beings. “Brear Possum’s Dilemma” pg 696 “Waters of Gold” pg 702
