April 19, 1861 • Lincoln blockades the South – tries to cut off supplies from getting to the south
Blockade Runners • Small boats that tried to get past the Union ships to get supplies into the South • At the beginning of the war, Lincoln didn’t have enough boats to effectively blockade the South • Throughout the war he got more boats
Blockade Runners • Wilmington – Blockade Runners supplied the city throughout the war • One brought in Yellow Fever • Sometimes they sank
July 21, 1861 • Battle of Bull Run • Believing that the war wouldn’t last long, people brought picnics to sit and watch the battle • Union defeat
February 6, 1862 • Victory for Gen. Ulysses S. Grant in Tennessee, capturing Fort Henry, and ten days later Fort Donelson. • Grant earns the nickname "Unconditional Surrender" Grant.
March 8/9, 1862 • Merrimac vs. Monitor • The Confederate Ironclad 'Merrimac' sinks two wooden Union ships then battles the Union Ironclad 'Monitor' to a draw. • Naval warfare changes making wooden ships obsolete
September 17, 1862 • Battle of Antietam • The bloodiest day in U.S. military history • By nightfall 26,000 men are dead, wounded, or missing. • Confederates withdraws to Virginia.
December 13, 1862 • Battle of Fredericksburg • Union defeat • One of the greatest victories for the Confederates
January 1, 1863 • President Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation • freeing all slaves in territories held by Confederates • encourages the enlisting of black soldiers in the Union Army. • The war becomes the war to end slavery • It wasn’t easy to enforce • Not many slaves knew about it
July 1-3, 1863 • Battle of Gettysburg • South loses • Turning Point of the war • Devastated the South Economy • South loses support of England
November 19, 1863 • President Lincoln delivers a two minute Gettysburg Address at a ceremony dedicating the Battlefield as a National Cemetery.

June 15, 1864 • Union army misses the chance to capture Petersburg • Instead they put Petersburg under siege for 9 months
September 2 • General Sherman (Union) captures Atlanta • Victory helps Lincoln get re-elected
November 8, 1864 • Abe Lincoln is re-elected
December 21, 1864 • Sherman’s March to the Sea • Sherman marches his troops from Atlanta to Savannah destroying everything in his path
January 13-15 • The Battle of Ft. Fisher • Union wins and now controls the entrance to the South’s last major Port
January 31, 1865 • 13th Amendment approved • Officially abolishes slavery

February 22, 1865 • Wilmington is captured • Bellamy Mansion becomes Union headquarters • Lee said, “If Wilmington falls, the Confederacy falls” • Wilmington was the last port for the South
April 2, 1865 • The Union takes Richmond, Virginia – Confederate Capitol
April 9, 1865 • Lee surrenders to Grant at Appomattox Court House
April 14, 1865 • Lincoln and his wife go to a play at Ford’s Theatre • John Wilkes Booth sneaks in and shoots Lincoln
April 15, 1865 • Lincoln dies • VP Andrew Johnson assumes presidency
April 26, 1865 • John Wilkes Booth is shot and killed in a barn
May 1, 1865 • Reconstruction begins
