What role can play grandparentsforyoungergenerations in thefamilylife? (viewofpsychologists, sociologists, philosophers, educators, etc.) Grandparents as: • Source oflearning in basic knowledge • Source ofinspiration and ofinstruction in the area ofrelationships, socialinteractionsand communication • Patternsofperceptionofothers and appropriateempathy • Emotional support, help in criticalmoments • Natural pattern, idealofauthority • Support fortheadoptionofstandards, rituals, traditions and values • Fosterparents and primaryeducators • Economic support • …..
Contextof: • Individualizationand fragmentationoffamilylife, disruptionofsometraditionalfamilyties • Demographicchanges(higherlifeexpectancy, higherage by childbirth, time distance betweengenerations) • Increasinggeneration gap (changingculture and society, technologies´ development, differentvalues and norms)
Relationshipsofgenerationstoday? Survey 2010 • Respondentswerechildrenaged 12-13 years (104 respondents) and youngpeopleaged 16-18 years (98 respondents). • Fromthisnumbertherewere 137 women (67.8 %) and 65 men (32.2 %). • 202 questionnaireswereprocessed in total. • Everybody had at least onegrandparent. • 44,6% ofrespondents had bothmaternal and paternalgrandaparents

Intensity ofcontactswithgrandparents • 87,1% ofrespondentswere in contactwithoneofthegrandparents • 38,1% meettheirgrandparentseveryday (mostlybecauseofthe joint household) Interestin meeting grandparents more often
chatting(49 %) houseworkand gardening (18 %) watchingTV (6%) shopping (5%) somethingelse (5%) (walkingthe dog, talkingaboutmoney, playingcards, goingfortrips, learning on thecomputer and theInternet, etc.) 3% ofrespondentsstatedspendingtimewithsomekindof hobby 3) Leisuretimewithgrandparents
4) Contentofcommunication • Girls x grandmothers– housework, cooking, recipes, family, friends, relatives • Girls x grandfathers– youthofgrandfathers, WorldWar II, communism, school, boys • Boys x grandmothers– school, sports, girlfriends, parents • Boys x grandfathers– technologies, do-ityourself, history, girls 20,3% ofrespondentswerefullysatisfiedwiththecontentofcommunication 2,5% fully not satisfied
Conclusion • Grandparents are valuablefamilymembers no matterwhatistheliving arrangement. (Thechildrenneedgrandparents but do thegrandparentswant to begrandparents?) • No effectofthelivingarrangements on thequalityofrelationships - possibility to use themodern media forintergenerationalcommunication • Closeconnectionofgenerationalattitudes to thefamilyclimate and attitudesofparentstowardsthegrandparents – (theworsesituation in thepaternal line) • …………………………….
