Vygotsky’s Social Development Theory • Social Development Theory argues that social interaction precedes development; consciousness and cognition are the end product of socialization and social behavior. • Learning is cognitive development through social interaction Lev Vygotsky (1896-1934
Vygotsky’s Social Development Theory Major themes: • Social interaction plays a fundamental role in the process of cognitive development of a child. • The More Knowledgeable Other (MKO):The MKO refers to anyone who has a better understanding or a higher ability level than the learner. • The Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD):The ZPD is the distance between a student’s ability to perform a task under adult guidance and/or with peer collaboration and the student’s ability solving the problem independently. According to Vygotsky, learning occurred in this zone.

Role of parents as role model A child unknowingly copies its parents. It considers their parents as a role model. • Mahatma Jyotirao Phule said -If a man learns, he learns alone but if a woman learns, the entire family follows.
Role of adults in child’s learning Children look up to their parents for their reaction for determining own success. That’s why parent’s reaction can become an extremely important tool to shape children’s personality. A parent’s light reaction to a serious mistake may ruin the child. On other hand, a hug for a nice work can lead him to nobility.
Learning with parents • Any skill can be learnt effectively only due to the active participation of parents in the learning process and The child attains to ZPD • Children largely depend on adults for getting acquainted to new ideas as well as new relations. • They feel comfortable with new things too when parents are there to support them.
Teacher’s role in child’s learning • Actually in conventional mode of education, teacher can not do a sufficiently satisfying job even if s/he wants to. • Teachers can play very considerable change in child’s life as the child spends much of his active time with teacher. • Teacher is responsible for shaping up of child’s life in true mean. • A teacher can effectively imbibe that study is fun not a torture.
Role of grand parents • Grand parents play a important role in imbibing the values and morals on child. • Grand parents can handle the critical situations in child’s life as they are armed with ample experience and tons of patience.
Role of Elder siblings • A Child learns things like sharing, conduct in family, caring and responsibility towards duties from their elder siblings. • They are a sort of immediate support person for the child. • A Child learns from the prior experiences of their elder siblings and try to avoid repeating the same mistakes.
Role of neighbors • A Child becomes aware about their surroundings by interacting with the neighbors. • A Child gets lessons in conduct and gets a chance to compare its understanding at home in the company of adults.
