  2. Introduction What is a spread sheet? • A spread sheet is a programme used to organising data. • It is also referred as a ‘big calculator’. • A vast amount of jobs use spread sheets for various purposes. For example: Teachers use spread sheets to organise the results of their pupils.

  3. Rows and columns • Rows are horizontal and in the cell reference, they are the part with the numbers. For example in the cell reference A4, 4 is the reference of the row. • Columns are vertical and their part in the cell reference is the letter. For example in the cell reference A4, the A is the reference for the column. Columns Rows

  4. Functions and Arithmetic symbols • Arithmetic symbols are functions that are used to calculate sums, using cell references. • REMEMBER that at the beginning of a formula, there is always and = sign! • These are the main symbols: / is divide +is addition - is subtraction * is multiplication
