Do Now Suppose our class groups are beginning a lab. Consider the following situations and describe (using complete sentences) an accident that might happen as a result. • Student A likes to wear her long hair loose. That day in lab we use fire to cause a chemical reaction. • A chemical solution is being heated in a glass container. Student B hates to wear his glasses or safety goggles because he thinks they look uncool. • The instructions look boring, so students in group C just look at what other people are doing in class, to figure out what to do. • Student D thinks it would be amusing to sit on the lab surface. It is lots of fun and he becomes very lively.
Chemical Hazards!!! Chemistry
How do we determine the hazards of chemicals? • Safety Symbols • Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
Guided Practice: MSDS • Common name of substance & other names? • Section 1: Chemical Product & Company Identification • Section 2: Composition, Information on Ingredients • Formaldehyde/Formalin • When would you encounter this chemical? • Working with preserved animals or science lab • Physical Characteristics (look, smell, color) • Section 3 or 9 • Colorless liquid with a pungent smell
Formaldehyde MSDS • Flammability? • Section 5: Fire Fighting Measures • Flammability 1; Combustible Liquid • What happens if you inhale it? • Section 3: Hazards Identification • Highly Toxic • How do you store it? • Section 7: Handling and Storage • Store with hydrocarbons, esters, and aldehydes
Formaldehyde MSDS • How do you clean it up? • Section 6: Accidental Release Measures • Contain the spill with sand or absorbent material and deposit it in a sealed bag or container. • What does it react with? • Section 10: Stability and Reactivity • Strong acids, bases, and oxidizers • Special protection or precautions? • Section 8: Exposure controls, Personal Protection • Avoid contact with eyes, skin, clothing.
FormaldehydeChemical Placard Flammability Health Reactivity Personal Protection
Questions???? • Independent Practice • Each person will get a MSDS sheet for a different chemical and identify specific information for that chemical. • Homework • Create a Chemical Placard for the selected chemical.
