Job Duties & Responsibilities • Visits farms and meets with farmers • Study one or two small areas such as nutritional needs or genetics • Design experiments to answer research questions • Train assistants in research methods, testing, and laboratory procedures • Analyze data and interpret results • Write technical reports to document research and findings • Use computers to organize, analyze and store data • Attend seminars and read journals to update knowledge

Qualities and Skills • A poultry scientist should be analytical and able to use their logic to determine the strengths and weaknesses of an experiment • They should also be able to read and understand written materials and use math skills to solve problems • Communication skills are also necessary for • poultry scientists • They should have the ability to sit while • analyzing data and writing reports • They should have the ability to stand while • conducting tests • Good eyesight to see details of objects

  4. Salary • The median wage for scientists is $54,144 a year • Half of all scientists earn • between $19.86 and • $34.22 per hour, or • between $41,304 and • $71,172 a year.

  5. Work Environment • Work is done outdoors on farms and indoors in laboratories • Traveling/visiting farms may be required • Low level of social contact • Work regular 40-hour weeks

  6. Becoming a Poultry Scientist • A bachelor's degree is the minimum requirement for entry-level or assistant positions. • A degree in animal science, food science, biology, or chemistry is often preferred. • Many employers, especially in research, prefer to hire applicants with a Ph.D. or at least a master's degree. • Universities choose candidates based on their area of research and the quality of their published articles. • Applicants may be required to pass a civil service exam for government jobs.
