  3. How do roots work? • Prefixes, bases, and suffixes are all roots. • When joined together, these roots create new words.

  4. Prefixes come at the beginning. Bases come in the middle. Suffixes come at the end.

  5. Prefixesgive important details about the word. Bases describe the main idea. A base is the main meaning of the word. Suffixes also give important details.

  6. A prefix is a word part added to the beginning of a root word.

  7. Can you figure out how each of these prefixes gives a new meaning to the base “cycle”? • unicycle • bicycle • tricycle • motorcycle • recycle Cycle= circle or wheel

  8. A prefixchanges the meaning of a word. Cycle means wheel, but recycle means cycling back or again.

  9. Remember- A suffixis a word part added to the end of a root word.

  10. Can you figure out how each of these suffixes gives new meaning to the base? • hard • harder • hardest • color • colorful • colorless

  11. Remember- A suffix gives a detail about the word.

  12. How can I use this word’s roots to figure out what the word means? birthday Think …. I can take the word apart… day birth means the day you were born

  14. You can tell the meaning of a new word by “dividing and conquering” its roots. • Preview Pre/view Pre=before View=see Preview means to see something before others see it. • Review Re/view Re= back or again View= see Review means to go back and see something again.
