  3. CSA refers to the Confederate States of America, the name the south gave their new country when they seceded from the USA. • Jefferson Davis was elected president of the new Confederate States of America. CSA/ Jefferson DAvis

  4. Union’s war strategy • Winfield Scott • Consists of blockade of South and control of Miss. Rvr. • Compared to the snake that slowly strangles its prey to death. Anaconda Plan

  5. States that allowed slavery, but did not secede from the Union. • Deleware, Kentucky, Missouri, and Maryland • Lincoln could not afford to lose these states to the Confederacy. Border States

  6. Commander of the Army of Northern Virginia. • Formerly one of the best senior officers in the US army. • Offered command of the US army, but declined, feeling loyalty to his home state of Virginia. Robert E. Lee

  7. 1st bloodshed of the Civil War • Occurred at Manassas Junction in VA, only 25 miles South of Washington DC • With the help of “Stonewall” Jackson’s reinforcements, the Union suffered a defeat. 1st Bull Run/ Manassas

Union troops march east across GA, led by General Sherman. • Purpose: to make Southern civilians understand the horrors of war. • Cuts a path of destruction through GA (at times 60 miles wide), butning corps, ransaking houses and killing livestock. • Example of TOTAL WAR!! Sherman’s March (to the sea)

  19. Just after 10pm on April 14, 1865 Lincoln is shot in the back of the head by John Wilkes Booth. He dies the next morning. • This occurs at a play at Ford’s Theater. Lincoln’s Assassination
