WARNING A PERSUASIVE ARGUMENT ON THE GLORIFICATION OF THE ANTI-HERO AND ITS EFFECTS ON TELEVISION VIEWERS
The increased portrayal and “celebrification” of the anti-hero or similarly regular people engaging in illegal or harmful activities is negatively influencing television and Internet users to do the same.
ANDREW CONLEY • 17 years old • Strangled his brother with his bare hands • Claimed he “felt like Dexter” • His favorite show • Referred to the lead character’s murders as “cool” • Currently serving a life sentence
JASON HART • 27 years old • Murdered girlfriend, 33 year old Regan Jolly (pictured below on right) • Body submerged in a tub of sulfuric acid • Avid fan of AMC’s Breaking Bad
LIONEL TATE • 12 years old, 170lbs • murdered 6 year old, Tiffany Eunick(pictured below) after attempting to imitate the wrestling moves he had seen on t.v. • Eunick suffered a lacerated liver, a broken rib, a fractured skull and internal bleeding • Tate was convicted and considered at the time, the youngest person to receive life in prison
Other Victims Martin Martinov • 13 years old • Accidently strangled himself on the playground monkey bars after attempting to recreate a stunt he had seen on Fear Factor • 5 year old, Viloude Louis (picture above) • Repeatedly slammed on the bed, punched in the stomach, elbowed • Succumbed to injuries- broken ribs, a lacerated liver, internal bleeding • Brother was imitating WWE Jose Serrano • 11 years old • Second degree burns • He and his friends recreating scenes from MTV’s Jackass • Doused rag in flammable liquid, tied around Jose’s leg and set on fire
Or possibly a lighter example…. • Swallowing a tablespoon of cinnamon without the use of water • Coughing, choking, andoften gagging for the amusement of others • In the most extreme cases, some required the use of ventilator support for collapsed lungs
My Argument • Young people have the “greatest need for conformity” and highly susceptible to peer pressure • Television is acting a perverse tool of education • Making kids more aware of medicine cabinets, pools, etc. where they could injure themselves • Often don’t see the consequences of actions for the villain • Immediate reaction towards violence in nonexistent adding to sense of invincibility • Not limited to violence • Sex • Alcohol Consumption
Rebuttals Counter-arguments • Media literacy influences how we, the consumers, perceive the media and the world around us • The line is blurring between what is right and wrong as viewers start sympathizing with the “bad guy”, often cheering on his wrongdoings • The anti-hero is presently becoming a popular model in television dramas, often rendering the “good guy” obsolete • A majority of the television consumers do not commit murder, set themselves on fire, or accidently commit suicide. • There are television shows which depict the villain receiving punishment for his or her actions • Ex. Law and Order
Why? • As Donna Bowman, a writer for an entertainment newspaper claims in a BBC article, the portrayal is “driven by the imperative of success and the imperative of security to do horrible, horrible things […] We understand how the conditions of today don’t allow us to remain clean, and that it’s just a matter of how dirty we’re willing to get in pursuit of what we’ve always been told we should want “ (Moloney, 2013). • Suddenly we can get what we want--- $$$, attention, or a mere 15 seconds of fame if we are willing to “break bad”
