  1. Accounting is considered as the language of business. It is a science as well as art of measuring the result of an organization's economic activities. The information is then conveyed to investors, creditors, management and regulators. The subject of Accountancy can be further classified into several fields such as financial accounting, management accounting, auditing and tax accounting. Out of the three academic streams, commerce seems to be the most desired field of subject. Rapid industrialization has given birth to a huge number of opportunities for commerce graduates. Accounting, however still remains the favourite profession for students with commerce background.

While pursuing accounting as a career option, a student comes across various professional qualifications such as Chartered Accountancy (CA), Cost and Works Accountancy (CWA/CMA) and Company Secretary (CS). The duration of this course is 5 years. A student needs to appear for the Common Proficiency Test (CPT), which is a pre-requisite to pursue CA. A student becomes eligible to sit for the exam after appearing for the standard XII examination. After successfully clearing 12th standard as well as CPT, the student can register for Integrated Professional Competence Course (IPCC) with Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAI). The next step after clearing IPCC (Group-I and Group-II) is to apply for CA Final and start article-ship, in order to gain exposure and experience in accountancy. In order to become a Cost and Management Account, a student needs to appear for an examination conducted by ICWAI. Just like CPT, examinations are held twice in a year (in June and in December). The eligibility to appear for examination also remains the same. However unlike CA, which gives full-fledged accounting qualification, CWA only provides a platform for cost and management accounting. Just like CA, a student undergoes three stages to become Company Secretary. The examination for CS is held by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) and can be taken by any student after clearing 12th standard. Although, the course comprises three stages: foundation, executive and professional, a graduate (in any discipline except fine arts) will have to complete only the last two levels.
