Welcome to Special Lecture! • Strategy, Policy, and Planning. • What is strategy (or strategic management)? -a full set of commitments, decisions, and actions required for a firm to achieve competitive advantage and to earn above-average returns. -Sample questions: -Why can Walmart earn more profits than rival firms? -Why is the airline industry less lucrative than the pharmaceutical industry? -In the airline industry, why could only Southwest earn a profit?
Course Format • Two parts: Lectures and case discussions. • Case packet (required): Cases from Harvard Business Publishing (its URL will be given shortly). • Textbook(optional): Hitt, Ireland, and Hoskisson. 2010. Strategic management: Competitiveness and Globalization. 9th Edition. Southwestern, Cengage Learning (Concept Version!) • Although I will provide slides in each class, the textbook is helpful for your understandings of the lectures.
Topics Macro environment • External environment and internal organization analyses • Strategy formulation -Business-level strategy, competitive dynamics, corporate-level strategy, M&As, international strategy, & cooperative strategy. • Strategy implementation -Corporate governance, Organizational structure and controls, strategic leadership, & strategic entrepreneurship. Examinations (30%) • Final examination is cumulative will be held in the last class (TBA). • Most questions are short essays. • The test is open-book; you can use anything you want. • I will give you sample questions before the exams.
Writing Assignments (20% x2) • Two writing assignments (due date: 5/31 & 7/4). -By using concepts covered in class, please analyze a firm, industry, and/or event that you choose. OR -Please analyze cases discussed in class from a different viewpoint. -1-2 single-spaced pages. -I will provide sample questions in each class.
Group Presentations (20%) • In every other class, I will assign a group (5 or fewer students) to group presentation. • The topic should be the summary of an assigned business case. • Students are supposed to present its summary, discussion points, and your thoughts. • After each presentation, the audience is supposed to participate in class discussion.
Class Participation (10%)& Extra Credits (10%) • Class participation is highly encouraged. -Questions outside the classroom are also welcome. • I will give some quizzes in class. • Extra credits will be given to remarkable efforts in class. -Writing additional reports, -Good group work performance.
Grading • I will seek specific and logical answers in all exams and assignments. • If you show your clear understandings of concepts and logic taught in class, you will get A. • A>=90, B>=80, C>=70, D>= 60…and F <60.
Policies • Attendance at class is highly encouraged. • Academic honesty and integrity are expected. -No plagiarism! • If you have special needs, please let me know. • If you have to be absent from a class because of religious holidays, let me know in advance. • Needless to say, all communication should be conducted in English.
