2. pdm vitality_HI.ppt 8/20/2012 Welcome –
Years ago a court jester got carried away with his mimicry and mockery of the king. The king incensed beyond reason ordered him put to death immediately.
Member of the court interceded, “Good king this jester has served you well for over 40 years. Have mercy and change your mind.
King paused, and then said. “I cannot go back on my word. However you are right about that so I will give the fool a chance to choose the way in which he will die.
The fool bowed before the king and said, “If it is all the same to you sire, I would like to die of old age.”
Use White board to draw the following
Sage: as you get older, you’ve got to expect your health will decline – you are at your peak at age 21 – we all know that millions of brain cells die very time you take
Fool: dying in the saddle.
Vitality is about quality in life – Dr. Pearsall spoke about miracles, awe, reverence for life
Tools to use to make this a part of your own life:
Review a collection of my own observations that have now been combined with research – not new ideas, true is never new – perhaps presented in a way that will stimulate your to think differently about some aspect of your living
Will add suggestions and time for reflection so that you can use this information for your own vitality

Recognize 6 elements that form vitality
Identify 6 practices that can lead us toward high vitality.
All have the potential to be vital
Some find their way to this place earlier than others
Use those who reflect vitality in their lives as examples
Easiest way for humans to learn new behaviors is to mimic those who have already developed this quality in their own lives.

5. pdm vitality_HI.ppt 8/20/2012 What is Vitality? Exuberance for life – adaptability, imagination, enthusiasm, willingness to go the extra mile
Is unique to each individual’s make-up
It varies with how the individual’s powers are invited from the interior of an individual to the surface – (David Whyte, Crossing the Unknown Sea, Riverhead Books, 2001.)
There is no lever to pull inside a person to pull to activate this creativity
There is no specific slogan that will activate the juice
It is difficult for individuals and for organizations to find this creativity and vitality.
It is genuine – not a false sense of well being – not the New Year’s day self or Pollyana in hell who says at least I don’t need my overcoat.
It is not the ability to work 24/7
Vitality is self-actualization – peak experience changes into a plateau experience

6. pdm vitality_HI.ppt 8/20/2012 Stressed Out? Selye – 1957 – a basement in Montreal – watching rats run through the maze.
Beginning of the rat race – no matter how fast you run you can’t keep up
Demonstrates mind-body connection
Dr G – stress hormones cortisol, aldosterone, adrenaline and noradrenaline
Adaptation led to exhaustion – then we identified “burnout’ – the best and most caring become the most cynical and dispirited
How do you notice you are stressed out? – if you are not paying attention you will end up with a physical Sx before you recognize it
Begins earlier with feelings – inadequacy, can’t get the job done with the resources at hand,
Mental – They are asking too much of me – they are wrong or I can’t do it, I am not good enoughDr G – stress hormones cortisol, aldosterone, adrenaline and noradrenaline

11. pdm vitality_HI.ppt 8/20/2012 Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting:
The Soul that rises with us, our life’s Star,
Hath had else where its setting,
And cometh from afar:
And not in utter nakedness,
But trailing clouds of glory do we come
From God, who is our home:
Heaven lies about us in our infancy!
Shades of the prison-house begin to close
Upon the growing boy,
But he beholds the light, and whence it flows,
He sees it in his joy;
The Youth, who daily further from the east
Must travel, still is Nature’s Priest,
And by the vision splendid
Is on his way attended;
At length the Man perceives it die away
And fade into the light of common day.

12. pdm vitality_HI.ppt 8/20/2012 Enemas are my specialty The big nurse tends to get real put out if something keeps her outfit from running like a smooth, accurate, precision-made machine. The slightest thing messy or out of kilter or in the way ties her into a little white knot of tight-lipped fury. She walks around with that same dull smile crimped between her chin and her nose and that same calm whir coming from her eyes, but down inside of her she's tense as steel. I know, I can feel it, and she don't relax a hair till she gets the nuisance attended to - what she calls "adjusted to surrounding." P. 26

Think of a time when you were highly stressed out
Think of a time when you were ‘most alive” – most fully yourself - what were you doing, thinking, feeling, who were you around, how did you relate to those around you and your environment.
The beginning of feeling better is knowing how you feel right now.Inner moment not senior moments – recommend using this phrase “I was taking an inner moment to monitor my direction
