A campaign of leak search was performed before the run, curing all leaks except for the fast circulation ones. A specific intervention was organized to address a large leak at a connection valve. The leak has been cured this week, but the system is not tight. Tentative replacement with a second pump has been found.

Investigation of the RICH-1 fast circulation problems Before the run, a campaign of leak search was performed All leaks cured, apart from the fast circulation ones The fast circulation system was severely leaking, so we started the RICH operation without fast circulation He sniffing located a large leak at a connection valve between the main circulation and the fast circulation: this could not be cured easily, a specific intervention was organised This week the leak has been cured, but the system was not tight Separating the parts, we isolated the problem on the turbo-pump Fulvio Tessarotto

Tentative replacement A second pump, identical to the faulty one was found by Erich Albrecht yesterday and kindly given to us. It has a label with the integral of the operating time: 41000 h, old one: 52000 h at least (reading from the controller counter) The “new one” is from 1994 and has been operated until 2000 It is less noisy and less leaky Very rough leak test: from -3 mbar to -1 mbar after ~ 5 min operation in air: ~0.06 mbar l s-1. This value has to be compared with >2 mbar l sec-1 (old one): at least 30 times better. Still, we consider it too risky for the vessel contamination to use it. Fulvio Tessarotto
