Beginning of a Revolution • Protests originally began in March of 2011. • Economic differences between the classes of people caused much unrest. • The Al-Assad reign caused a profit draught and an increase in the poor. • As well as a very poor economy, Syria had a lot of racial tension between ethnic groups that occupied Syrian cities.
Actions by Syrian government • The Al-Assad reign caused a profit draught and an increase in the poor. • The Syrian government used troops that fired on protesters to stop the protests. • These protests kept escalating until it was an armed revolution on both sides.
By July of 2013 more than 100,000 Syrians were killed and 20,000 more would die in the next two months due to harsh fighting and a about 150 deaths due to the use of chemical weapons.
Goals of Revolution • The protests began as ways to get the Syrian government’s attention. • When things began to get violent, a group called the Free Syrian Army was formed and it announced its goal as removing the regime that controlled Syria. • They wanted to stop the violence and bring peace to a Syria at war.
U.S involvement • There was not much U.S involvement in this war. The U.S never deployed troops to Syria however they did back the Syrian rebels. President Obama did threathen to take direct action if chemical weapons were used.
