Getting Started with Mathematica Welcome to IT’s seminar on Mathematica Sam Gordji, ccsam@olemiss.edu Weir 107
General Information • Questions will be answered during the seminar • What is Mathematica? “Mathematica does mathematical operations” • Its competitors are MathWorks, Maple, and others • University decided on getting Mathematica after looking into other similar packages
General Information • Email contact • Email your questions to mathadm@olemiss.edu • Any full time student or faculty may install Mathematica from the myOleMiss Web portal, please visit: http://www.mcsr.olemiss.edu/appssubpage.php?pagename=mathematica.inc • Please fill out the performance report and leave your email address so we may contact you for follow up questions
General Information • This seminar is for beginners and covers how to access information from UM Web as well as from Mathematica’s Website • MathWorld is a site supported by Mathematica and contains solutions to many mathematical problems • All the work in Mathematica is performed in a Notebook
Introduction • Mathematica is a very powerful and user friendly package that most students from many disciplines may use • Mathematica is available to students, faculty and staff (UM Oxford) at no cost • IT has several articles on Mathematica. These articles are designed to familiarize users with different parts of Mathematica
Introduction • The webpages for these articles and the Demo Notebook called “Math_sem0.nb” may be downloaded http://www.mcsr.olemiss.edu/educationsubpage.php?pagename=augcamp08.inc • Other IT articles on Mathematica may be downloaded from http://www.mcsr.olemiss.edu/mathematica/fall_sem/
Introduction • Some of Mathematica’s Webpages: http://library.wolfram.com/infocenter/BySubject/Mathematica/ApplicationPackages/ http://www.wolfram.com/services/ http://www.wolfram.com/siteinfo/ • The last one contains UM site Information and help users to find various information such as services available to UM users, etc.
Introduction • Mathematica’s main function is to perform Mathematical operations • This seminar is based on how Mathematica is being used at the University of Mississippi
A practical problem • The following equation is the solution for the Richard’s equation and yields the amount of time needed for the saturated surface content to reach the residual moisture at the surface (Z=0) 2.18*((t/pi)^.5)*Exp[-t/4.] =.216 • Please note that all the parameters are substituted in the above equation.
Y-axis is the moisture content and the x-axis rep. depth. The graphs show how evaporation takes place
Introduction • Mathematica’s Startup Palette • Lets look at First Five Minutes with Mathematica • Using Help finding a function • Palette, basic_math.nb • Math_sem0.nb
Introduction • A fun site to visit: http://demonstrations.wolfram.com/ • UM contribution to Mathematica: http://library.wolfram.com/infocenter/MathSource/5961/
