FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT “JOY” & “PEACE”
Galatians 5:22, 23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
BUMPER STICKER WISDOM “NO JESUS, NO PEACE” “KNOW JESUS, KNOW PEACE”
“Knowing Jesus” • Will not take painful, sad, and adverse experiences away from your life • it may create more physical adversities for you 2 Timothy 3:12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
“Knowing Jesus” • Will not take painful, sad, and adverse experiences away from your life Galatians 6:17 From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus.
“Knowing Jesus” • Will not take painful, sad, and adverse experiences away from your life • Will impart a measure of joy and peace within adversity
Defining Joy & Peace • “JOY” • great happiness – feelings of great happiness or pleasure, especially of an elevated or spiritual kind • something that brings happiness – a pleasurable aspect of something, or something that is seen as a source of happiness
Defining Joy & Peace • “PEACE” • freedom from war – freedom from war, or the time when a war or conflict ends. • mental calm – a state of mental calm and serenity, with no anxiety. This one is best for our study today
The Christian’s “Peaceful Environment” • Peace with God • Romans 5:1, “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” • Peace with fellowman • Rom. 12:18, “If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men” • Peace with self (Phil. 4:6-9)
The Christian’s “Peaceful Trichotomy” Philippians 4:6-7 6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
The Christian’s “Peaceful Trichotomy” Philippians 4:8-9 8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. 9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.
The World’s Wrong Reach The world seeks joy: • by dismissing or eliminating sorrow • by filling their lives with “pleasurable things” PROBLEM: • sorrow surrounds everyone and easily fills our heart, soul, and mind • material/physical “things” only have a temporal effect
The World’s Wrong Reach Ecclesiastes 2:1-11 1 I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity.2 I said of laughter, It is mad: and of mirth, What doeth it? 3 I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet acquainting mine heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.
The World’s Wrong Reach Ecclesiastes 2:1-11 4 I made me great works; I built me houses; I planted me vineyards: 5 I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits: 6 I made me pools of water, to water therewith the wood that brings forth trees: 7 I got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before me:
The World’s Wrong Reach Ecclesiastes 2:1-11 9 So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me. 10 And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labor: and this was my portion of all my labor.
The World’s Wrong Reach Ecclesiastes 2:1-11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labor that I had labored to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.
JOY IN ADVERSITY? Mat 5:10-12 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. 12 "Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
The Rose A certain man planted a rose and watered it faithfully, and before it blossomed, he examined it. He saw the bud that would soon blossom and also the thorns. And he thought, "How can any beautiful flower come from a plant burdened with so many sharp thorns?“
JOY BLOOMS IN ADVERSITY? 9 For I think that God has displayed us, the apostles, last, as men condemned to death; for we have been made a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men. 10 We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are dishonored! 11 To the present hour we both hunger and thirst, and we are poorly clothed, and beaten, and homeless. 12 And we labor, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure; 13 being defamed, we entreat. We have been made as the filth of the world, the outcast of all things until now. 1 CORINTHIANS 4:9-13
Persecution Blossoms Into Joy & Peace • Acts 5:41 “So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name” • Philippians 2:17 “Yes, and if I am being poured out as a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all”
WHY? • THE CHRISTIAN’S, “JOY” & “PEACE” ARE NOT CONNECTED WITH EXTERNAL CIRCUMSTANCES • “JOY” & “PEACE” SPRINGS FROM BEING CONNECTED TO CHRIST’S VINE, EVEN WHEN SURROUNDED BY THORNS
WHY? James 1:2-3 2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith works patience.
For What Should We Be Joyful? • That our Savior has come: Luke 2:10-11 10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
For What Should We Be Joyful? 2. That we have found the kingdom of heaven: Matthew 13:44 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hides, and for joy thereof goeth and sells all that he hath, and buys that field.
For What Should We Be Joyful? 3. That our names are written in heaven: Luke 10:20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
For What Should We Be Joyful? 4. That we have fellowship with one another: Romans 12:15-16 15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. 16 Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.
For What Should We Be Joyful? 5. That some who were lost repented Luke 15:7 I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repents, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.
Fruit of the Spirit John 15:5 I (Jesus) am the vine, ye are the branches: • We must be connected to the vine • We must abide in the vine • We can not do anything without the vine • We wither when apart from Jesus the vine • We have the privilege to “ask” in Christ’s name • We bear much fruit while attached to the vine • We glorify the Father as part of the vine
Jesus on Discipleship! JOHN 8:32 “Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, ‘If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.’” “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.” MARK 16:16 Jesus on Salvation!
