National Defense Act -The National Defense Act of 1916 provided for an expanded army during peace and wartime, fourfold expansion of the National Guard, the creation of an Officers' and an Enlisted Reserve Corps, plus the creation of a Reserve Officers' Training Corps in colleges and universities. The President was also given authority, in case of war or national emergency, to mobilize the National Guard for the duration of the emergency. 2. Naval Construction Act 1916 - $500 million was ultimately spent on ten battleships, six battle cruisers, thirty submarines, fifty destroyers, and other support vessels to be built over a three year period.

13. Propaganda Poster Class for the next two days – we will be focusing on the role of Women in during World War I. You have seen what propaganda pieces have came out from this time period. Your assignment is to create a piece of propaganda that describes the either the attitude, overall feeling, or sense of need of women during World War I. You will be graded on content, artistic value, and logic on this assignment. On the back of this piece of propaganda you must include: (see next slide)

Propaganda Rubric On back of Art Work: • Name -1 Point • Date - 1 Point • Period - 1 Point • Class Title - 1 Point • Quote - 1 Point • Explanation– 5 Points The explanation of this piece of propaganda should tell the viewer what it is that your piece of propaganda is explaining about not only the art you have created, but the general idea during this time period. On Front of Art Work: First off – No Stick Figures. You will receive a “0” – End of Story – Don’t even bring that argument to this class – you will lose. You are creative – you just may not know it yet. This piece of propaganda should direct the viewer to exactly what it is your are trying to show. Connect relevancy of historical fact to the viewer. I.e. If you are showing that women were needed in the factory, create a picture that shows their importance – the need – the want – and the desire of these women to work hard for their husbands, neighbors, and country men. Create art within the art work that show the feeling of the time. How will you bring importance to these central figures during the crucial time period in American History? – Use the class readings to help you brainstorm an idea!
