Tsunami NOT TITAL WAVES!!
Types of waves (confusion) Tsunami Wave Tidal Wave Caused by the gravitational force between earth and the moon. 1-100 meter wavelength. • Caused by under water earthquake or landslide. • 100-1000 kilometers wavelength
Location • Most tsunamis form near convergent plate boundaries under water. • However waves can and will flow over the whole ocean so ALL coastal cities need to be aware.
Tsunamis from a landslide • Some large “mega-Tsunamis” have been formed from landslides. • Litya Bay, Alaska 1470 foot tsunami restricted to bay. • Many large volcanoes • CumbreVieja in the Canary Islands • Might create 2000 foot tsunami in the Atlantic Ocean!
Other tsunamis • Impacts from meteors and asteroids. (ask the dinosaurs) • Can happen in large lakes!Also called seiche • 1847 & 1854 Lake Ontario! (creepy huh)
